Democratic state senator running for U.S. Senate seat held by Graham (Good News!)

COLUMBIA, SC — Brad Hutto, a leading Democrat in the state Senate, has filed to run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Lindsey Graham.

Hutto joins Columbia businessman Jay Stamper, who moved from Washington state last year to run against Graham, in seeking the Democratic nomination for the seat. Six Republicans have filed to challenge Graham in the June 10 GOP primary.

The Orangeburg attorney, who has been in the state Senate for 18 years, said the divisive battle among Republicans over Graham presents a chance for a Democrat to win the Senate seat, which has been held by the GOP for 50 years. Graham is under attack by some conservative Republicans who say he compromises too much with Democrats.

“I know South Carolina is a Red State, and Republicans have a leg up,” Hutto said Friday. “I saw that it’s going to be a (GOP) bruising primary, and that would give me an opening.”

Hutto, 56, said he thinks he can woo Republicans dissatisfied with Graham with a pitch "that I’m a practical middle-of-the-road guy."

“I have no aversions to working with Republicans,” Hutto said.

Hutto said South Carolinians liked having U.S. senators from different parties, Republican Strom Thurmond and Democrat Fritz Hollings, for nearly 40 years. “They’d say, ‘We always had somebody to go to,’ ” he said. “Sometimes having people on both sides helps.”

South Carolina’s other senator, Republican Tim Scott, is running this year to complete the unexpired term of Republican Jim DeMint, who resigned from the Senate last year to head the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank.

The democratic nomination will be contested! That is good news! There will be less crossover votes to help little Lindsey get to 50% in his primary!

Comrade Hutto says, “I’m a practical middle-of-the-road guy”.

That’s exactly what we DON’T WANT!!!

By saying that, he identifies himself as pro-abortion, pro-gay agenda, pro victim-group ideology.

NO . SALE . !!

The only good news is that there’s a chance to divide the DemonRATS in the primary.

Right! In an uncontested primary, lots of democrats would switch to protect Lindsey Graham, who we all know is one of their own.

Whatever helps keep Lindsey under 50% is great news for us!!

Good news is right maybe fewer Dems will cross over. But even if graham is nominated we might be able to run a third party conservative and defeat him with the Democrat. I haven't supported or voted for a Dem for senate since I have been voting for the last 42 years. But, Graham is doing so much damage stabbing us in the back that I think getting rid of him is paramount even if it means electing a Dem.

When Reid tells him to jump, the “middle of the road guy” will ask how high.

Not sure if I follow you.

According to SC election law, a losing candidate in a primary, or a run-off,is NOT able to then file to run as an independent. Graham couldn't thus try and pull a Murkowski..

Absolutely. I don’t vote for democrats either, and if I lived in SC or KY I still wouldn’t, but I would withhold my vote from the republican to help their defeat.

Both Graham and McConnell are dangerous oligarchs, who should be removed from power at all cost!

The idea is to have a third party conservative if Graham wins the primary. The idea is to get him out at all costs even if it means throwing the contest to a Dem.

I think a third party conservative could win in SC, if it came down to it. You only need 34 percent of the vote.

This is the promising part. He’s running to the right of Graham.

“I have no aversions to working with Republicans,” Hutto said. “

Then suck it up and vote for the dem if you think it is paramount. I think every GOPe in leadership should be defeated in the primary and if that doesn't work then vote for their democrat opponent, or nothing will ever change.

He is very similar to Graham. The other Democrat is closer to Berni Sanders. Maybe he will be against starting 10 wars.

Hutto also touts his 100 percent rating from the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce as another plus for his candidacy.

“Then suck it up and vote for the dem if you think it is paramount.”

I live in Massachusetts. I did my part by withholding a vote from Scott Brown, resulting in him and his treachery being thrown out of office. I can only encourage others in other states to do the same.
