I had a thought....what if a toxic gas was introduced into the aircraft ventilating system, such that it incapacitated the crew and passengers.....??

They might be able to find any poisons if they recover any bodies. Some of the bodies from Air France Flight 447 were remarkable well preserved under water for 2 years (until they attempted to bring them to the surface).
