DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee who has been a prominent voice as President Barack Obama attempts to overhaul U.S. surveillance, said Friday that he wont seek re-election after his term ends this year.

Unexpected good news...
My opinion as well.
The district was Romney 51%, Osama 48%. Osama won it in 2008 52-46% (McLame didn’t contest Michigan).
Competitive, but we should hold.
Good riddance. That sucker sure has gotten fat in Washington. I can’t imagine he has much appeal as a radio talker.
If not for Lansing that district would be a solid hold for republicans.
Get that Bonehead prop out. Don’t leave mad Mike, just leave.
Livingston county has been getting redder by the year though, too many transplants running from what they created just so they can recreate it again it seems.
Coffee!! I mean bluer...
Don’t say more GOP or more Dem. Using the newspeak political colors created by the media just confuses everyone intelligent.
Excuse me, I meant “DO say more...”
Must be even Ole Mike is tired of carrying water for the Gestapo Agencies. That or one of the Alphabet Soup Agencies offered him a opportunity he couldn’t refuse for his willingness to cover their asses...
Most likely the Latter.
Unexpected...
The linked article quotes him as saying that he wants to be a “productive conservative” voice on the radio, a perspective that he says is missing. So.... it sounds as if he wants to be a more moderate alternative to Rush, Hannity, et al. Hah! Good luck with that!
Anyway, I am taking a wild guess that there is more to this story. No idea what that is. Men his age (50) very rarely walk away from positions of power that they have spent so much effort attaining.
Here’s a good analysis of the district prepared by Republican Michigander (a former FReeper under another name, and a resident of the MI-08) in mid-2013 (back when it was rumored that Rogers would run for the Senate): http://republicanmichigander.blogspot.com/2013/04/congressional-district-8-updated-2013.html
Yes, the district would be safely Republican if Lansing and East Lansing were removed (GOP redistricters should have placed those overwhelmingly Dem areas of Ingham County in the (heavily Dem) Flint-Saginaw-Bay City MI-05, but they never have), but as it is it’s quite competitive, with a slight GOP lean. It’s GOP core is Livingston County, which Rogers used to represent in the state senate; his successor there was Desert Storm veteran Valde Garcia, elected to the state house in 1998 and the state senate in 2002 and 2006, but term limits prevented him from running again in 2010. http://ballotpedia.org/Valde_Garcia Valde Garcia would be the natural successor to Rogers in Congress, but given that he served for 12 years in the Michigan legislature he must have cast a few votes with which some conservatives disagreed, so I expect that he’ll be labeled a “RINO” or “GOPe” and eschewed in favor of some Paultard in his 20s. That’s what happened in MI-03 in 2010, although hopefully we’ll get rid of the Palestinian Paulistinian Justin Amash in this year’s primary.
Nah, it was Freudian. I’ve done the same thing.
Either Valde Garcia or current State Sen. Joe Hune (who is only in his early 30s, Garcia is in his late 50s) would seem the most likely, unless there are other names from the private sector or lower office. Hune would have to give up his seat to run, however.
Radio show? Clearly he wants to build a higher national profile for, uh, some reason. :’) Thanks cripplecreek.
