e latest look at autism in the U.S. shows a startling 30 percent jump among 8-year-olds diagnosed with the disorder in a two-year period, to one in every 68 children.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which did the survey, says the numbers almost certainly reflect more awareness and diagnosis of kids who would have been missed in years past. The new estimate for 2010 was a jump from one in 88 children in 2008, the last year for which numbers had been available.
The number of children diagnosed with autism continues to rise, the agencys Dr. Coleen Boyle told reporters.
But the CDC noted that the numbers vary greatly from state to state, and it did not use a nationally representative sample, but a look at groups of children in 11 states.
The number of children identified with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) ranged from 1 in 175 children in Alabama to 1 in 45 children in New Jersey, CDC says in its report, based on a survey taken in 2010. The numbers from 2008 were first reported in 2012.
This would work out to about 1.2 million children under 18, Boyle says.
Dr. Max Wiznitzer, a child neurologist at Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital in Cleveland, who was not involved in the study, said he believed the numbers, but thought they reflected a rise in diagnosis, not "the true prevalence of autism."
I'm not convinced that the true numbers of autism are rising, rising, rising every time we survey them, Wiznitzer told NBC News in an interview.
Over time, more children are being identified, agreed Dr. Lisa Shulman, a specialist in autism at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York.

Yes, I have been reading the articles since this morning. It’s horrible when freepers think that parents are just in it for the money.
I never said I completely agree that the numbers are rising as fast as some people say. I just remember all the comments in the past where freepers claim parents tell their children to act “crazy”, so they can get a government check. Well they is no check just incredible expenses. and worry about what will happen when we are all dead. Will Orion be loved and treated well or will he be shoved in some group home and abused?
I don’t imagine I will get involved in anymore discussions about autism on FR.
I didn’t mean to offend.
Praying for your grand son and family.
Did you see the article last week on the autism doctor who has had good success with eliminating MSG from diets. It was posted on FR.
I”m going with ‘You’re a moron”.
I wish FR had a “like” button like FB. I could have “liked” a couple posts on this page. Well I’m leaving work now if I can stop crying long enough to walk home.
Don’t let some cynical comments and/or humor discourage you from FR. Their are other parents of autistic children that you might be able to help here.
I know where the poster of comment 4 is coming from. He’s relating it to the ADHD problem where there was an epidemic of ADHD diagnosed and Ritalin was being prescribed like crazy and come to find out there was an incentive for the schools to have the kids diagnosed with problems.
It was a leap in logic based in ignorance. But you just need to expect some of that on FR and not let it bother you.
Do a Startpage search for
“autism and immunization shots”
You can probably throw in the flu shots too.
“Look to our diets.”
That’s a joke right? If it’s not it’s bunk.
EXCUSE me....???? You need to do some research....and I did not say ALL!
.....HA....in my husbands family...they are known as FINNS!
So you're claiming that there is no fraud in the SSI program? That every family that receives SSI for a supposedly disabled child is on the up-and-up?
“I wish FR had a like button”
That”s just laziness. Just say it. Why do you have to resort
to consensus instead of making a good point.
“Do parents and schools receive extra money for kids with autism? If so, weve found our answer...”
In my experiance, this is a white welfare scam and a means for parents to get their (completely normal) children a better education via a smaller teacher:student ratio.
When I see people get the autism tattoos for relatives with fake cases, I have to laugh; the children in question are behaving as normal “only children” who have both parents working full-time (so they are raised by television).
how much of this is a surge in autism cases, and how much a “surge” in mere declarations of a diagnosis of autism, resulting from the increasingly sliding scale (broader) of what can symptomatically qualify for a “diagnosis”/determination of autism and ADHD as well
“My theory on Aspergers is television. Too much stimulation too early.”
I think you’re right. Infant minds are designed to have initial environment information poured in like a fire hose. Unfortunately, having context-free 1024x768 digital images flickering at the rate of 40fps poured into that nascent mind is NOT what that process was designed for, and most likely it causes the poor infant’s brain to get an incredibly warped view of the world.
Setting any infant in front of a TV may the worst form of child abuse imaginable.
I don't settle for that level of argument on this forum. FReepers are better than that. If you think it's bunk... tell me why you think it's bunk.
Why?
I was not making fun of the affliction / condition. I was really commenting on how the liberals use deception when they use people’s emotions or take advantage of a situation to further their cause.

People have eaten grains for thousands of years. What is wrong with grains?
Why are some who eat grain autistic and some aren’t?
No, there's no EXCUSE for your nonsense. You said:
MANY diagnosed with autism can be helped/cured with a change in diet....no wheat/gluten
MANY can be helped or cured of autism by a change in diet that eliminates gluten? That's crazy talk worthy of the likes of Jenny McCarthy. Are you a blonde, too?
