Democratic Congressman Bruce Braley holds a slight lead over his three top Republican challengers in Rasmussen Reports’ first look at the 2014 U.S. Senate race in Iowa.

A new statewide telephone survey of Likely Iowa Voters finds Braley with a 41% to 38% lead over businessman Mark Jacobs. He leads State Senator Joni Ernst 40% to 37% and runs four points ahead – 40% to 36% – of former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker. Braley posts a 13-point lead – 44% to 31% – over another GOP contender, conservative talk show host Sam Clovis.

The survey of 750 Likely Voters in Iowa was conducted on March 24-25, 2014 by Rasmussen Reports...

This is the Senate seat being vacated by Tom Harkin. Congressman Braley is unopposed for the Dem nomination. There are five Republicans running in the June primary.

Poll conducted before Braley's recent remarks attacking Chuck Grassley as a farmer who didn't go to law school.

Is this one we were already counting as a pickup toward taking the Senate? or is this an extra?

This is one the Dems have been counting on.

He won't be in the lead for long once this gets out in Iowa...

Braley’s ‘farmer from Iowa’ remarks could spell election trouble for party

I think Braleys poll numbers are weak considering that he already represents 1/4 of the state. The others are not very well known. Joni ernst would be our strongest candidate.

Making fun of farmers when boozing in Dallas with your trial lawyer buddies and running for an Iowa Senate seat are normally not compatible with one another. However, the election season is young and the Democrats are crafty and will lie, cheat, steal to overcome great obstacles.

The Dem is just barely beating any of several Republicans? That means once there’s a single nominee, the Dem is likely to get thumped.

Braley has huge name recognition compared to the Republicans so this poll has to make him nervous. He may have slit his own throat in his recorded appeal to out of state trial lawyers where he self-identifies as one of them as opposed to being a "real" Iowan.

Also, Ernst has released a commercial that is getting national (free) air play, which can only help her cause.

This is one the dems need in order to hold the senate and it's not looking very good for them at the moment.

So within the margin of error on all of them except the talk show guy.

I have him at 9th on the list of Vulnerble Dems. So the answer to your question is NO. But the seat is certainly in the "We Could Use Some Insurance" category. If you see a 2010-like election for the Senate races this year this seat could move to the GOP favored category.

Very good news.

Once the “farmer” comment gets out, it will kill him.

Thanks for posting that link. I give to the Senate Conservatives Fund - hope she ends up being sponsored by them.

Braley’s remarks assume that it’s a negative if you are NOT a lawyer. That shows how out of touch he is with the ordinary folk.

Braley is the person who slammed ‘farmers’ recently. IIowa voters should be outraged.

Not only did he disparage farmers, but in the same comment he managed to brag about working against tort reform (he fought tort reform) for the last 30 years.

Maybe you can run in NY or CA bragging about preserving lawyers’ income stream, but I doubt it will play well in the heart of the Midwest.

Plus, Palin has now endorsed Joni Ernst, who was also only 3 pts behind Braley in the same polling.

Ms. Ernst is the clever lady looking to go to Washington, DC to try out her hog-castrating skills on the federal government. I don’t know much about the lady, but I love the ad.

It would be an extra. Braley has stepped on the rake. We need to move in for the kill.
