We have encountered many physicians and friends who dont recall or recognize just how many interesting coincidences had to fall into place for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to pass both houses of Congress and gain President Obamas signature (March 23, 2010). This post serves as an informational overview a reminder as to how it all happened and is not meant in any way to be a judgment on the process however convoluted or on the final product.

Spector’s dead dead dead!
Good riddance. I bet he’s “waffling” in hell right now.
I think the dems wanted to send it to conference committee, and Reid and Pelosi would stack the conference committee, shutting out the GOP. Then both houses would approve whatever came back from conference committee. The delay in doing this was caused by moderate dems in the senate who weren't sure they wanted this because they were worried the conference committee would move the legislation way to the left.
Either way, Scott's victory threw a monkey wrench into the dem plans.
And Pelosi had to pull in a lot of chits to get enough house dem votes to approve the senate bill(34 dems voted against it)
“Push as hard as you can. The higher the numbers, the more certitude this thing is going to last forever.” - Vice President Joe Biden to the National Association of Community Health Centers conference about enrollment in the Obamacare exchange, March 21, 2014, POLITICO, 3/21/2014.
Stat of the Week:
2.4 to 3.5 million - people have enrolled in Medicaid as result of Obamacare in a study comparing sign-ups between October 2013 and January 2014. This is far less than reported by HHS.
BTTT!
Sen Durbin is a Congressional stalwart---always on TV---expected to sail to victory. But how many voters know Durbin voted for ACA---exhibiting lock-stepping party loyalty not seen since 1930-40's era Europe. How many of his constituents lost their affordable plans?
This needs to go viral:
SEN. RICHARD DURBIN: We believe and we stand by this if you like your current health insurance plan, you will be able to keep it, plain and simple, straightforward. (Sen. Durbin, Congressional Record, S.6401, 6/10/09)
MEMO TO DURBIN VOTERS Lock-stepping Durbin embedded all of this into law:
(1) throwing millions of Americans off affordable health plans,
(2) burdening Americans w/ ruinous deductibles,
(3) nationalizing 1/6 of the US economy,
(4) installing IPAB's (Death Panels),
(5) abandoning seniors and the chronically ill,
(6) pulling $750 out of Medicare,
(7) decimating intergenerational transfers of wealth (grandma/pa's holdings go to the govt---not to you).
