Germany’s defense minister, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Sunday that NATO should show greater support for member countries who could face military aggression from Russia. However, the comments were met with sharp criticism from some German parliamentarians, who accused her of contributing to the escalation of tension around Russia’s actions in Crimea. In an interview with German public broadcaster ARD, the defense chief dismissed those critics and stood by her position.
“It’s important to make clear that NATO isn’t just something on paper, but that we are there for each other,” von der Leyen said in comments that were broadcast on Sunday evening.
NATO showing its support for the Baltic states—who are concerned that Moscow’s recent activities in Crimea could spill over into their territories—would be carried out “within the parameters we already have [under NATO],” she said, adding that her own support for additional measures was not contributing to the “escalation.” …

Well, if the Ukraine were part of NATO, you might have something.
The scope of this crisis, as regards Germany, has not yet come into focus.
Germany has a lot at risk, but also has a lot (potentially) to gain.
If it bothers you, Ursula, then do something. It’s not worth one American life or dollar. Get off our dole.
That seems to be a minority opinion here. I generally agree. Ukraine is a kleptocracy, and it will quickly become the USA's fight and money being sunk into a black hole. The Chechyns gave the Russians something to worry about for years with IED's, snipers, etc... If anyone Ukraine truly wishes to defend their country - there are many ways to do it.
Checheniya has rugged country to hide in. Ukraine is flat as Kansas. Attack helos will find and kill any who resist the new Russian Empire. Poland faces a Fourth Partition if they wait for NATO to defend them.
It’s kinda hard with two burgeoning empires on either side of it.

Why does Germany need a defense ministry?
maybe the ukranians should invite the old germans to visit. you know, the ones who took ukraine in ‘41-’42 and did a delay in ‘43-’44.
