The real Sam Adams was a vicious anti-Catholic bigot and a failed brewer. He made his living as a corrupt tax collector. The modern beer company has the same sentiments as its namesake.

“When he was employed as a tax collector in Boston, he tended to mismanage the funds. Between 1753 and 1765, a shortage of £8,000 in Adams’ accounting was discovered. No charges were filed against Adams because an investigation later showed him to be grossly negligent, not corrupt. Being a truly honest man, Adams reimbursed the entire amount which had been lost due to his mismanagement.”
