KIEV, Ukraine In an effort to stabilize Ukraine and extend its authority, the interim government has set a deadline of Friday for turning in the illegal firearms that are now carried openly by so-called self-defense groups in Independence Square, the politically important plaza in the center of the capital.
The order was seconded on Thursday by the French ambassador to Ukraine, Alain Rémy, who said the disarmament of the militias that helped overthrow the former government is a central requirement for the European Union to begin disbursing financial aid, along with the government fighting corruption.
Prime Minister Arseniy P. Yatsenyuk, who was a staunch supporter of the protesters but never condoned violent tactics, set the deadline for Friday, the day Ukraine is scheduled to sign the political articles of an association agreement with the European Union.

It would appear the IMF’s dirty little fingerprints are all over this latest piece of legislation in Ukraine. The Ukraine Finance Ministry is proposing to take a very-similar-to-Cyprus approach to bailing in its despositors:
*UKRAINE PROPOSES NEW TAX ON DEPOSITS EXCEEDING 100,000 HRYVNIA
*UKRAINE TAX PROPOSAL WOULD INCLUDE 1.5% OF ALL DEPOSITS
This would appear a measure designed to stabilize the budget for potential IMF negotiations and fits perfectly with what the IMF has consistently hinted as the next steps for many nations.
Eggsactly....
It amazes me how people fly off the proverbial handle over news like this, not knowing who the real culprits are.
Since our government funds the IMF, and others, we and the other funding nations are the ones forcing this action by the new government of Ukraine...
This is how the wonderful and generous nations of the West, fix things..and why they always fail at it unless they are fixing themselves.
Interesting how when faced with potential invasion their new government is more interested in seizing firearms from the populace.
Welcome to the new boss, same as the old boss.
the disarmament of the militias that helped overthrow the former government
Huh, but I read the Russians were the ones shooting. Oh well, the fog of revolution facts become sketchy.
So, Jim, is this the government SUPPORTED BY OBAMA???
Hmmm.
We helped.
...I have been suspicious of this government....they have the support of OBAMA.
Remember a few weeks ago when Obama’s Deputy SecState and the US ambassador to Ukraine were caught on a phone call saying “F*** the E.U.”? That was a conversation regarding WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO TAKE OVER Ukraine if the Yankuovich guy (I think that was him) was overthrown. Yankuovich was Russian leaning, and the EU and Team Obama were each supporting different successors.
My guess is Team Obama wanted a guy who would OBEY their wishes—which apparently includes GUN GRABBING.
What I’m getting on twitter and other sites is the people are refusing to hand over their guns...and rightly so...there is no order in Ukraine...even the gov. officials are struggling in their positions of authority on how to ‘run’ a nation and failing in protecting the people just from the criminal elements, who are taking advantage of the situation
The streets are full of crime currently...even old ladies carrying bats and wooden sticks to protect themselves. Sad to see that but there is much unrest there now, so the gov. is foolish to require people hand over their guns..not going to happen.
Additionally read today that 72 Ukraine Military Officers along with about 50% of the men have joined with Russia....and those who remained under Ukraine’s gov. are not getting orders and communication unclear at best.
It’s a mess there.....while they watch Putin securing up Crimea with everything they need..from generators to utility vehicles trucks and all in between. ....and it’s not just Putin..the Russian people are sending supplies etc.
For all this I think there will be an exodus of people from Ukraine at least temporarily.
Thanks for that link.....added the movie to my Netflix queue.
There is a great quote over there:
Edmund Burke reconsidered in the light of 20th Century funeral pyres.
“Remember: Evil exists because good men don’t kill the government officials committing it.” — Kurt Hofmann.
And of course if the question is “What evil?” Rummel has the answer.

The people of Ukraine are about to be fleeced if they stand for it. Lets consolidate more countries and saddle them with debt to the IMF/EU. We’ll show them how to fix their economies with top down control.
Oh, please turn in your guns and we will approve your loans.
Whose side are we on again? The new rebel government or the elected government of the now deposed President Viktor Yanukovych?
I hate to say that you've been conned, but you have been.
Which leads me to believe that the new government doesn't really fear a potential invasion at all.
1st Crimea, next America?
Come and take them baby.
Yes some have been conned. This whole situation has set off my alarm bells while freepers call me a communist.
How many more Ukrainians will petition Russia to return?
Agreed; I won’t give up my weapons.
What’s happening in the Ukraine should be a wake up call to their immediate neighbors, Europe, and us here.
Look at the pattern, the first thing dictators/power-grabbers et al do is try and disarm the populace.
An armed society is a free society.
