Fred Phelps Sr., the former head of the Westboro Baptist Church, died late Wednesday night, according to a family member.
Phelps' son, Timothy told 13 News that his father died just before midnight. Timothy Pheps works at the Shawnee Co. Jail.
Ironically, another son who is a member of the church, attorney Jonathan Phelps told us Thursday morning, "Pastor Phelps is doing just fine." That, of course, could have been a spiritual reference.
Over the weekend, we learned that Phelps was reportedly "on the edge of death."
In a statement on his Facebook page, Nathan Phelps, who has been estranged from his father for 30 years, said the senior Phelps was dying in hospice care in Topeka, Kan., and that he had been ex-communicated from his own church in August of 2013.

HA HA Props on my dead pool list LOL!
now comes the dead dunking by the Mormons...
I’ve watched some very strict hardliners moderate in their old age in my own family, the dawning realization that we’re all sinners in need of salvation, at the hands of a God who is not only an angry God but a loving one as well. It sounds like selling out to younger people who are not nearing the end of their lifes’ journey, who have not seen so much of human frailty, but in reality it’s forgiveness. So, I do tend to believe he moderated and was booted for it, that makes perfect sense in light of what I know, based upon my own experiences and what I understand of this church.
Well, he was doing stuff like this as far back as the early 1950s.
Yep. Well said.
And some believe the best way to subvert Christianity is to pretend to be one.
I thought I smelled sulfur..........................
I suppose if I’m going to follow my Savior I can’t go and picket his funeral.
He and his group have played into the hand of the queers and made many people more anti-Christian than they already were. Don’t forget he was a big supporter of Al Gore.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Now, any chance discussion of the creep and his cult will end?
Nah. Some other fool will pick up where he left off.
RIP. I hope you went to confession and confessed your sins and received Last Rights as that is the only way you may get into Heaven IMHO.
Hell no. They should have done no such thing. Who the hell is it of your business to protest anybody’s funeral. It is sick and you are sick to suggest such a repulsive idea.
Where do we get to protest his funeral? Lots of loud bikers might help.
It has been discussed and decided not to because it would just give attention which they live on. Plus why lower ourselves to protest a funeral. In my opinion you can’t get any lower than that.
Disgusting!
If indeed God has the final say....then only He and Mr. Phelps know this gentleman’s’s final resting place. I am often surprised how some of the Old Testament Heroes were actually pretty despicable characters earlier in their lives. Paul’s ( as Saul ) persecution of Christ’s followers
prior to his Damascus Road conversion comes to mind. Wherever, Mr Phelp’s resides depends upon God’s mercy. I know full well that while I may feel superior to Mr Phelps...in the end I will be equally dependent upon God’s mercy myself. My humble opinion only.
When and where are the protests going to be? I’ve dug my old uniform out of the closet for this.
Best way to treat attention whores, ignore them.
Phelps didn't believe he was subverting Christianity. If anything he thought people like you and me were.
The “Hallelujah Chorus” just burst forth in my brain.
Rot in hell sc**bag.
