A flight crew scouring the southern Indian Ocean for a missing Malaysia Airlines plane tells ABC News that they're getting radar hits of "significant size," indicating something lurking below the water's surface.
ABC News' David Wright, on board the US Navy P-8 Poseidon, said the crew tells him the radar indicates "there is something down there."
It is still too early to tell if the radar hits are related to the missing plane, which was carrying 239 people when it disappeared on March 8.
The P-8 is among four aircraft and one merchant ship heading to a region off the coast of Australia after two objects that may be related to the plane were spotted by satellite, officials said Thursday.

The irony of this tragedy is that even if this turns out to be pilot suicide, now terrorists around the world know that there are multiple holes in multiple country defenses, and that you are able to board planes with stolen passports.

I suspect that the crew experienced a fire, set the Autopilot in the direction of a nearby airfield, and was then overcome by smoke, with the aircraft continuing on the last inputted course until it ran out of fuel.
All of the supposed timeline problems will eventually be revealed to be the result of misreporting combined with the reluctance of the crew to declare an in-flight emergency.
You may be right, but I have to say that if a 777 can be lost in this manner, that's very concerning, and they should be reevaluating the vulnerability of all 777s. If a tire fire - as has been suggested, can lead to this kind of disaster, then you would think there would be fire suppression systems and smoke ventilation systems in place for this. If an electrical fire that could lead to this can happen spontaneously, that is also very concerning.
I can't imagine what this is like for the families.
The 777 is a plastic/carbon fiber airplane with a little aluminum. It is not magnetic nor good at reflecting much energy back at a radar/sonar source. Resting in chunks on an ocean floor it's practically invisible.
I've heard this bandied about and wonder at the supposed cause of a nosewheel tire fire.
Tire fires are the result of a locked brake heating up and igniting magnesium wheels and the tires mounted on them, and usually happen on landing.
Nosewheels have no brakes.
It’s so far off from it’s scheduled path to Beijing that it’s in an entirely different part of the world.
Now they are saying the P8 did NOT find anything and returned to Perth, will not return until at least 10 hours later.
What this means is Breaking News for the next 48 hours of the same old tune.

This 777 is a big flying chunk of aluminum and most of it will sink PDQ.

If it is a situation so dire they have to divert the flight, yet they don’t mention word one to the tower about it makes no sense.

One again “journalists” manage to screw up even basic facts about a story but expect people to take them seriously.
How is the “possible object” in that photo different from the numerous other similar looking objects in the picture?
You are too trusting of so called journalists who have spent more time in conjecture than reporting facts. The timeline is important, but perhaps we don’t know the precise sequence of events.

Plus, it made at least two additional course corrections out over the Straits of Malacca after the original westward turn. Someone was controlling the plane and it was responding accordingly. No fire.
Why is the Maldives sighting suddenly silenced?
Either that or there is some misreporting on the time of either the sign-off or the diversion, with the sign off actually occuring first. If you look at a time zone map, Vietnam and Cambodia are North East of Malasia, but in an earlier time zone, which is screwy.
ugh, another day of endless speculation and conjecture. I am getting bored with this story because the pretty much have quit reporting anything else.
