The Hempstead school board won't renew the contract of a principal who instructed her students not to speak Spanish, in a rapidly-evolving district where more than half of the students, like many Texas schools, are now Hispanic.
Hempstead Middle School Principal Amy Lacey was placed on paid administrative leave in December after reportedly announcing, via intercom, that students were not to speak Spanish on the school's campus. The Hispanic population of the rural area, roughly 50 miles northwest of Houston, is growing quickly, and Latino advocates say that it's important to allow Spanish in public schools.

OTOH, this kind of action--firing the woman--is a bit overboard in my opinion.
Civil rights advocates say Lacey's suspension may have set off a campaign to intimidate Hispanics, including the district's superintendent, Delma Flores-Smith. They are calling for the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate possible civil rights violations. An FBI spokesman would not confirm an investigation.

Paid leave.
Houston ... We Have A Problem!
The kids were speaking Spanish to talk crap about teachers and other students thinking they would get away with it...
This the ban.
And we’re worried about Putin?
How about Vietnamese, Polish, and Creole French? Why should only those who came to Houston from south of the border have special whims catered to?
My grandfather when he was little had problems at school because his parents spoke Norwegian and he didn’t speak that good of English when he started school. When my mom was little Grampa would not allow anything but English in his house.
Expect a spike in enrollment at local private schools.
I guess. She will effectively be fired when her contract isn’t renewed over this.
Not an overboard reaction?
Government school is child abuse.

Principal who told kids not to speak Spanish will lose job
It seems in places like California, it is English that is being banned.
I was in Lowe’s the other day and noticed new signage that was entirely in Spanish and I’m also seeing signage with English in small print under Spanish.
Empuje numero dos para Ingles!!
NAU.
“When my mom was little Grampa would not allow anything but English in his house.”
My German grandparents not only spoke only English, when the argued they did it with a dictionary in hand. “Pusillanimous! What does that mean?” (flip, flip, flip) “Why, why you par-si-mon-i-ous old bitty!”
LOL
“Grampa would not allow anything but English in his house.”
Same with my French great grandfather.
Truthfully, the principal made a mistake in not giving a good reason for the ban.
“While you may speak Spanish at home, school is to teach you how to be successful in the United States. To do that, you need to be able to not just speak English, or even *good* English, but you must have a mastery of English.
“If you can just speak English, you can get a job that doesn’t pay much and the work is hard. If you can speak *good* English, you can get a much better job, that pays more and the work isn’t as hard. And if you become an expert in English, you can get a great job that pays a lot.
“If this was a Spanish speaking nation, the better Spanish you spoke would be your key to success. But almost all America speaks English, so to get ahead here, you need to practice and learn to read, write and speak English as well as you can.”
