STATE DEPARTMENT With Russia's most vocal critics imposing economic sanctions over Crimea, some of Moscow's allies are also questioning its actions in Ukraine.
In Syria's civil war, China and Russia have together blocked tougher action against President Bashar al-Assad, denouncing foreign support for the rebels as a breach of Syrian sovereignty.
Now, China has quietly split from Russia over Crimea -- on the same issue of sovereignty.
"China always respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states. The Crimean crisis should be resolved politically under the frameworks of law and order. We call on all sides to remain calm and exercise restraint to avoid further escalation of the tension," said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei.
China wants nothing that might encourage separatist tensions, making Crimea a costly move for Russia, said American University professor Keith Darden.

Sounds like the acid-washed jeans response that the Indians gave. If Obama thinks the Chinese are going to join him in sanctioning Russia, he’s dreaming. He’ll be lucky if he can muscle Antigua & Barbuda into doing it, he’s that weak.
China worries about separatism in Xianjing and Taiwan.
Friendship with Russia has its limits.
As if China doesn’t have a plan to annex the Spratley’s.
I thought China would see parallels between Crimea and Tibet and back Russia on this.
I guess it saw the precedent of having a referendum for a region to determine its own fate as dangerous even if the referendum is not free and fair.
Were they dating?!?!
Where’s Obama? Did he go to bed again?
China knows it. The only question is have they become so Americanized that they don't want to bother?
Now we have American University Professors saying it’s wrong. Maybe he’ll give Putin an F in his class.
Wonder why china abstained at the UN vote? Answer ... china traded an abstention for a later russian abstention is my best guess.
Hah
That’s funny
Coupla weeks ago they were down straight for this
So the ChiComs stabbed him in the back
Nice neighborhood
Bingo! Russia is biting off more than they can chew. They are Risking Islamic uprising in its territories. The Population in Russian Territories are of Turkish origins going back to the Ottoman Empire.
Turkey has been very vocal about condemning the separatist movement in Xianjing. Turkey has been most critical of Russia's annex of Crimea which has a Turkish population. Does this signal support to the Turks under Russian Rule to oppose Russia?
Can you say TIBET or TAIWAN, mr. Putin?
Free Tibet you barbarians!
No China is practicing a policy that a wise US practiced in the late 19th Century. Many Americans heard about the hundreds of Chinese students sent to the US to study modern management and technology when China decided to reform their Communist system to free market during the 1980. Little is known about a small group of Chinese students sent to study US rise to great power and how we did it. These students were unique because their country instructed them to clear their minds of all the past things they were taught about the US by the Communists. They conclude the US rose to power by first developing their economic power first, kept out of wars and foreign entanglements, and emerged after the great powers of the day killed themselves in world war. IAW be the monkey on the rock watching two lions fight. Despite Chinese challenges over Taiwan, and islands, China had not committed troops and ships overseas in major wars or nation building activities. China has not been the policeman of the world while the US sticks her nose in everything. Russia is joining the US in a similar folly with actual commitment of troops in Crimea, Chenchenya, Georgia, Syria, etc etc etc. While the US/EU confronts Russia, China, India and Brazil will continue their rise to power unimpeded by US, EU and Russia.
Excellent insight in your post.
China has always claimed the Spratleys. Russia never claimed Crimea until last week.
Russia previously (1991) guaranteed Ukraine's sovereignty if they would give up their nukes....which Ukraine did. Now Putin is welching on the guarantee and the US is sniveling where it needs to oppose Putin strongly.
