Two reasons: one, it liberates one from the cancerous contempt (not to mention hate) that is inevitably associated with unresolved conflict. Anyone who insists, it doesnt bother me is lying.
Two, its ok to say to yourself, I forgive this person, first for not asking forgiveness from me, because that (not asking for forgiveness from someone you wronged) too is a sin against God and you. So its not being unjust or uncharitable, to indeed forgive someone who hasnt asked you for forgiveness. In fact its both charitable and just.”
