HEMPSTEAD - The Hempstead school board won't renew the contract of a principal who instructed her students not to speak Spanish, in a rapidly-evolving district where more than half of the students, like many Texas schools, are now Hispanic.
Hempstead Middle School Principal Amy Lacey was placed on paid administrative leave in December after reportedly announcing, via intercom, that students were not to speak Spanish on the school's campus. The Hispanic population of the rural area, roughly 50 miles northwest of Houston, is growing quickly, and Latino advocates say that it's important to allow Spanish in public schools.
"When you start banning aspects of ethnicity or cultural identity," says Augustin Pinedo, director of the League of United Latin American Citizens Region 18, "it sends the message that the child is not wanted: 'We don't want your color. We don't want your kind.' They then tend to drop out early."
Such fast growth is pervasive in Texas, says Steve Murdock, a professor at Rice University and director of the Hobby Center for the Study of Texas. Half of all Texas public-school students are now Hispanic, he notes. "When you look at issues related to education in Texas, to a great extent, you're looking at the education of Hispanic children."
Similar growth patterns, he says, hold true for the rest of the United States: "It's not just Texas."
Civil rights advocates say Lacey's suspension may have set off a campaign to intimidate Hispanics, including the district's superintendent, Delma Flores-Smith. They are calling for the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate possible civil rights violations. An FBI spokesman would not confirm an investigation.

I liken America's decline to the life cycle and death throes of a massive star.
We burned on the 'main sequence' until the 1960's ... that's when our 'hydrogen' (ie. liberty) first began to show signs of depletion and we started to fuse 'helium' into 'carbon' and 'oxygen' and so on.
We're now a swollen red supergiant, with 'iron' in our core. When we start trying to fuse the 'iron', the collapse begins and a supernova ensues.
When Texas becomes a 'blue state', we're officially 'fusing iron', and we're soon going supernova.
Exactly.
My parents ranch in SE Colorado and have in their employ a young Mexican guy who grew up in Durango who has 3 children. They are probably 1st and 3rd grade with a toddler.
They do not speak a lick of English. My mother tells me they are way behind the other kids in school. Obviously, both parents speak Spanish in the home and there is no motivation for them to speak English (they both do) for the benefit of their kids. Surprise..
Another point is that it is not fair to the English speaking kids to be held back by these kids.
It sucks...
I’ll bet next month’s mortgage that Ms. Lacey is replaced by someone with a better suntan.
See. It's evil Whitey's fault that these poor Mexican kids drop out of school. I wonder what causes the low achievement of Mexican kids in Mexico.
"N-----, don't let the sun go down on your back in this town."
Even as a kid, I thought that was really weird...
same with the parents of my folks, as well. from italy and germany.
the difference is they had a mindset where they WANTED to assimilate into the country. they knew they would be altering things, in order to do well here.
the mexicans by and large do NOT want to assimilate. they are here only to work and get social benefits here so that they can send most of what they earn to their HOME COUNTRY. they just want to USE America like a condom and toss it aside when its usefulness is spent.
It’s total selfishness. they only want benefits and money and anything that makes their life easier here. they don’t want to blend in, assimilate and give up some of their identity to become integrated Americans.
the fact they want to carve out atzlan proves it. the fact they send what they earn home to mexico proves it. the fact many don’t even want citizenship but just want to make money here to send back to mexico, proves it.
“Somebody remind me again exactly what it is that unites us? “
Hispanic culture.
Your take on Mexican immigrants, legal and illegal, are much like mine and I would include many other nationalities as well, such as from Muslim nations.
Then drop an email to the city, the school board, the Chamber of Commerce. I just wrote one making it clear that their racism and bigoted anti-Americanism cost them every person I can tell NOT to go there and do business. The Chamber wrote me back and said it is tearing the town apart. I said, tough, then replace the board with Americans...until then, sorry.
I was under the apparentlt mistaken impression that everyone who wants to live in the U.S. should speak English, and the best way to learn it is to speak it!!
The rest of the world understands that learning English is crucial, especially to succeed in global business.
Not much anymore. It was once a great, unified country. Everything comes to an end, though.
Here's a link to a copy of the treaty. I see no mention of forsaking their culture and assimilating. On the other hand, the treaty doesn't provide any special protections for their language either (as some anti-English-as-national-language persons claim). The word 'language' doesn't appear anywhere in the text.
Or a total leftist with a major agenda...
Ya know if this is happening in Texas, what other regions/states have developed into. It’s just nasty to the core.
And think of the huge plus for big biz and their insatiable demand for low wage labor...Government loves it too as socialism and control is so much easier.
Culture includes the language spoken.

Hence my interpretation.
