Along the banks of the Mahoning River in the struggling Ohio steel town of Youngstown sits a once-abandoned furniture warehouse that has been converted into a sleek new laboratory.
Inside is a Silicon Valley-style workspace complete with open meeting areas and colorful stools. Several 3-D printers hum in the background, while engineers type computer codes that tell the machines how to create objects by layering materials.
The lab, called America Makes, is the first in a series of so-called manufacturing innovation hubs that President Barack Obama has launched with the promise that they could revitalize Americas industrial sector and spur jobs growth in downtrodden communities like Youngstown. Seven more hubs are planned by the end of the year, including projects in Chicago, Detroit and Raleigh, North Carolina, that will follow the Youngstown model of bringing together businesses, non-profits and universities to pursue technological breakthroughs.
But after more than a year of operation, the Youngstown hub underscores the challenges facing Obamas goal of ensuring a steady stream of good jobs into the 21st century, as he put it in remarks at a White House event last month.

But the point is the people of Youngstown thought there would be jobs not just for engineers but for labor as well because Obama lies whenever he opens his mouth.
Obtuse, inexperienced, overthinking, selfie-loving morons are what most of America's engineers are today. In another ten years it will be 100/1 ratios. The engineers just get worse and worse. I say just keep churning them out like mad. I already work 60 hour weeks and am on call every weekend because the engineers are terrified of their own mess they create.
I skin out my own skunks when I make a mess. Engineers just run the other way and point toward those at their six o'clock to blame. (with the exception of a few, and those are Germans)
No I didn't. I suggested lowering income taxes, but that alone will not bring manufacturing. Only the import tariffs will have a big enough impact. I specifically pointed out that you could eliminate all income taxes and regulations and still not be able to compete. Only an import tariff will do.
This plan will scrap the welfare state. When people have jobs, they will get off of the unemployment and the food stamps. Until then, you can't scrap the welfare state. Trying to scrap the welfare state without first fixing the economy will just cost you elections and we will have even more socialist, redistributors and communists voted into office at all levels.
Free traders are enabling big government, because they are the cause of the high unemployment and the high dependency on government.
Our founding fathers thought import tariffs were wise. And they served us well until we abandoned them in the 1960's.
Maybe I misread her statement, which I took to mean that 3-D printing will skew demand toward engineers. I don’t think she meant that there would be no demand for non-engineers technically skilled at hands-on assembly or repair, but you are right that machines break down.
That is a fair assessment.
This is so FDR of Barry.
Yeah and did you see the funding source?
“The Department of Defense, which is contributing the federal funding to the Youngstown initiative, believes its demand for high-tech goods will help the broader economy, said Elana Broitman, acting deputy assistant secretary of defense for manufacturing and industrial base policy.”
Obama to job creation is as the black plague to life.
None of the measures will bring about the needed change alone. There is no singular thing to fix that can make manufacturing return to the USA, and certainly raising tariffs by itself will not do it; it will instead make investment and business abandon the USA as a failed state if the high taxes, draconian regulations and welfare state are left in place, because that would be the last straw (it’s also a currency killer).
I also didn’t say that the necessary measures can occur simultaneously; but once the jobs actually come back when enough occur at once, then the welfare state will have to be given a sudden curtailment to make those jobs get filled.
I seem to recall bringing up the fact that tariffs were the federal government’s primary source of income before income taxes were foisted on the populace. That’s another measure that needs to be addressed.
However, the social structure has been damaged almost beyond repair. No strong families, no embrace of right values, and there will be no recovery either way, because the higher power will be against us.
....definition of a stool sample.
Yup. Cut the regulations, cut the government, cut the taxes. In our current crisis, government is not the solution; government is the problem. Tear down the government walls; set our people free and let them produce. Free at last, God Almighty, free at last.
Everything obama has touched has turned to kaka. Not a penny he has spent outside of the military has done this country a speck of good. So, why should this be any different. When it comes to jobs, government is the problem, not the solution. If obama really wanted to see manufacturing jobs increased in this country all he would have to do is get government out of the way, not further inject itself into the situation.
BTW, I could create 13 million new jobs tomorrow if I was President: I’d simply kick out all of the illegal aliens that are taking jobs from citizens and massively driving down labor rates to boot. The latter is why the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is so hell bent on immigration “reform”.
There will still be demand from the U.S. consumers and businesses. We are the largest consumer market. Nobody is going to abandon us if we raise import tariffs.
And as far as the currency, what really weakens our currency is high unenmployment, and high government debt associated with that unemployment. Return industry and employment, and you'll see the nation's balance sheet imporve dramatically. And our currently will be just fine.
You may be right about the social values affecting God's blessing of our nation. But it's kind of a two way street. The economic stress takes it's toll on families and contributes to the social decay. We lowered the tariffs about the same time we kicked prayer out of schools. It may be that God is withholding wisdom from our leaders because of their social stands.
I almost stopped reading at “colorful stools.” Then I had to carry on. This program is nothing more than another redistributive program.
We are going to need a number of highly skilled workers to load plastic into 3-D printer, to take the finished item out of the printer, to box it, and to ship it.

Isn't that the end result of eating too much unicorn poop?
Anything Obama touches turns to sh&^.
What a joke.
Ptomkin factory.
If they are not exempted from o’care, it will go under.
No actual purpose except window dressing for his adoring media.
It's diet related.
