Ron Paul on Crimea: Why does US Care ?
Politico ^ | March 18, 2014 | Tal Kopan

Former Rep. Ron Paul says that America’s reaction to Crimea’s vote to secede from Ukraine should be,“so what?”

“Why does the U.S. care which flag will be hoisted on a small piece of land thousands of miles away?” the Texas Republican and libertarian icon wrote in a USA Today op-ed Monday.

...Over the weekend, Crimeans voted to secede from Ukraine and join Russia, which the Russian government has moved to approve. American politicians have called the vote a sham and the administration has said it does not recognize the results of the vote, placing sanctions on some Russian officials in response.

Ron Paul said at least three other regions, Catalonia, Scotland and Venice, are similarly seeking to leave their countries, and the U.S. and Europe should allow events to proceed uninterrupted there as well as Crimea, saying “self-determination is a centerpiece of international law.”

… Paul said the “minimal” sanctions from the White House is all the global economy can afford, and it is the global economy that promotes peace, not intervention.

time spent on FR as member = last resort of those without anything of value to add. You should get out more, really….you should. There’s a BIG BIG BIG world outside FR. Vacuum much?

USA should care except our Treasury is near bankrupt, so we should stay out of all foreign conflicts until our country is out of near bankruptcy.

True, but there are alternatives to open warfare, let's not forget. We would be fools to "not care" about what happens elsewhere in the world.

Yet again proving my point about your ‘ability’ to have a discussion, stay on topic, and engage in mutually respectful conversation.

but your point is not valid…..I’ve seen the owner of this site trash people far more harshly than anything I’ve ever done (and that’s his right) - and I’ve never seen him bring up the “how long you have been on FR mess” - so I sure won’t pay any attention to you whining about either……

The problem with your thinking is that Putin and Russia have had altercations with Baltic states in the past and not invaded them.

Well, there's that. /s

You diminish yourself. I checked your history and for the most part you use contempt and disdain in all but your favorite beer posts.

I have never seen Jim "trash" anyone. I have met him and he is an angel in disguise.

I support this forum and I encourage people to represent us well - people outside of it read here and take what they read away with them. And we need to work together here, more than ever before.

Well, if “there” freedom depended on people thousands of miles away in order to keep it, we can see what the problem is.

But Americans can’t seem to handle keeping their own freedom in their own boundaries, so it is foolish to think we could stand up for Ukraine. By the way, where were they in standing up for a free USA? Most of them were applauding our communist Obama.

Are you being sarcastic really? Putin is responding to a crisis that seriously involved Russian people.
He has most certainly been below the belt many many times with other countries, and few people were as upset as I was when Russia invaded Georgia.
I still don’t think that means he wants to take over Europe.

How about “oppressed” Russians in the Baltic Republics, with a couple warm-water ports thrown in for good measure? See that anywhere, recently?

Never under this loser but I have hope. What we badly need is a decent candidate. I do so love Ted Cruz and I think he has what we need. Don’t give up hope.
