Effective today, a new civil code in Hungary makes it illegal to take a photograph without obtaining permission from everybody in the photo, making street photographers and photojournalists jobs infinitely more complicated and opening the door for a landslide of litigation.
Reported first in The Guardian, the new law expands current regulations that prohibited the publication of images without consent, something justice ministry officials say merely codifies existing court practice.

If a political rally occurs, you can't take a photo of it.

I guess this means that surveillance cameras are verboten as well?

Guess you'll need one of these when visiting Hungary. I used to use this in parts of the world where people got REALLY upset if you took their picture without permission. People would give me some really hard stares which scared me enough to quit using it.

They’re just copying the Obama photo policy.

My oldest son is going to Budapest in May for a couple of days. Just sent him the link to the Guardian article. He usually takes 2-3 different cameras with him on his overseas trips. I wonder if this will make him change his plans, although I believe he’s already booked his hotel room.

I’m sure the Hungarian police and security service will honor this as well. /s

Budapest is a nice city.
I think the angst is much ado about little.
How many people take photos of individuals without their consent? I seriously doubt that the law applies to tourist taking wide view photos.

If he has not booked a hotel, I can recommend a great B&B
in a fine location. Let me know, and I will forward a contact.

My Sister and Brother-in-Law spend six months in Budapest every year. They sent me this pic of the Danube in flood last year. I think they use Budapest as their base for visiting other countries. I also think it is a little cheaper too.

Did they get permission from the residents of that city? All of them?

They have been traveling all over the world ever since he was a Naval Aviator back in the early 60s. My Sister told me last year that her husband who is approaching 80, does not take a single medication. He is in remarkable shape for his age.
I remember when they first began visiting Hungary she told me they were not good about helping you out unless you actually asked them for help, then they were very good. That first year they had a student respond to a request for directions, spend the whole day showing them around Budapest and he refused any money.
Evelyn did tell me that the best food they have found has been in Serbia. The friendliest people are in Poland and Scotland. Prettiest country overall, I was surprised she said Hungary thinking maybe Austria, Germany or Switzerland would be best.

This and the previous picture were actually from two years ago.. I bet they could write a book about their travels. John had hid wallet lifted on the Paris subway but the cops caught him and the wallet still had the money in it. Evelyn had her purse stolen in Chile by three guys. John who was around 65 at the time chased them down and was going to fight them over the purse even tho they all pulled knives. My Sister had to beg him not to. He really is a tough guy. He played for FSU in college until an injury ended his career.

I found Hungarians to be very laissez faire about leaving people be. They are not a officious people. I did always feel that there was a lot going on that I couldn’t see.
