Maybe a better analogy would be the people in the Panama Canal Zone asking to be taken back by the United States after Jimmy Carter gave it away. (Unfortunately, the Chinese have already taken it over).

Well if a bunch of occupier leftists had overthrown the Mexican government and then the residents of Baja had voted in 90%+ numbers to join the United States, then yes it would be analogous.

Texas seems to be have the closest correlation to the events in Crimea.

Not exactly. Crimea used to be part of Russia but they gave it to the Ukraine while they were the soviet empire.
This would be more like part of the Philippines voting to become a US state and then the US accepting that area as a state.
