Russia media say Crimea votes 93 percent to quit Ukraine

(Reuters) - Russian state media said Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to break with Ukraine and join Russia on Sunday, as Kiev accused Moscow of pouring forces into the peninsula and warned separatist leaders "the ground will burn under their feet".

RIA news agency said 93 percent backed annexation, citing an exit poll released as voting ended at 8 p.m. (1800 GMT). Another Russian agency said turnout was over 80 percent.

Caught in an East-West crisis reminiscent of the Cold War, Kiev said Russia's build-up of forces in the Black Sea region was in "crude violation" of an international treaty, and announced plans to arm and train 20,000 members of a newly-created National Guard to defend the nation.

Wish we could vote like that. I’d secede in a heartbeat.

The last time a part of the U.S. tried that, the national government responded by saying it wasn't valid, which eventually led to, well, you know.

By your logic, parts of the USA that have enough Mexicans can vote to region Mexico if they so wish.

“If it were 100% it might looked rigged. LOL”

Or like Philadelphia last election. Oh wait, that was 102%! Evidently RATs can’t count headstones with any accuracy.

Everyone is aware of course that Crimea had a different form of self government than all the other districts of the Ukraine.

That isn’t my logic, that is your logic. I wouldn’t give Mexicans the right to vote anything.

But, I do support secession if that is what you mean. It is the only way to get away from the massive hoards of welfare ghetto crud and their liberal cage keepers. I’d move today if Utah, Montana, or Wyoming could secede from the US.

Thanks, I’d seen that story. Under Putin’s benign leadership, the Tatars will end up like the Chechens with a huge cycle of violence to follow.

They would have won the vote count without inflating the outcome. Life was never good in the Ukraine (it is poor country). The Russians promised a big leap in pension (almost double), retirement age reduction (60 years old men, 55 for women), nobody in their current jobs to be fired if doing satisfactory work, everyone gets Russian passports, better military pension if switching sides (three times greater), higher pay for the military, generous housing allowances for military, gas 50% cheaper, etc...

The pattern of government in the Ukraine has been: Popular Revolt to election won by one group of hopelessly corrupt politicians to bureaucratic revolt to election to install pro Russian mafia to popular revolt and chaos. I wouldn’t view an out and out thief as a legitimate government when he ran on a reform ticket. Of course, by that measure, there aren’t that many legitimate governments around.

Yeltsin was seriously ill and a drunkin' slob and finally resigned. Putin as PM succeeded him and it was not a coup. Three months later, there were elections.

The IMF had given Russia under Yeltsin $40 billion...and it disappeared.

In the last election, Putin got about 60% of the vote. The Communist Party got almost 20%.

Its all about the money stupid: jobs and benefits.

And voters the world over never say “no” to these kind of things. Certainly Russia is a prosperous country but now it has to figure out how to pay for those promises to Crimean voters.

The sell was the easy part; the challenge will be in delivering on all that was promised.

“Those reports prove the election was massively rigged by Putin’s Russian regime, because the demographics alone make such an election result quite impossible”

Never watched an election in Chicago, DC, or Detroit, have you?.
