The estranged son of the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church said his father is "on the edge of death."
Fred Phelps Sr. became famous for organizing picket lines of brightly-colored signs carrying hateful messages against tolerance during the funerals of military personnel and famous figures. His actions led to at least two federal and several state laws restricting protests during military funerals.
In a statement on his Facebook page, Nathan Phelps, who has been estranged from his father for 30 years, said the senior Phelps was dying in hospice care in Topeka, Kan., and that he had been ex-communicated from his own church in August of 2013.

I hope Teddy Kennedy has a spot all warmed up for him
“And dont anyone forget - this jerk was a DEMOCRAT.”
Why would anyone be surprised about that?
“Is he a real person? I always thought they were some kind of street theater or performance art. Sort of like Andy Kauffman wrestling.”
Your assessment is more accurate than the media’s.
Fred Phelps was a crusading civil rights attorney. In mid-life he decided to pick up a divinity degree and open up a “church”. His church consists of his family, most or all of whom are also lawyers. They engage in very public, very objectionable, displays of speech and promptly sue the hell out of anyone that violates the civil rights of the “church” members.
Phelps has been known to make campaign contributions to crusading liberal democrats, has publicly and vocally supported liberal policies and politicians, hell he even campaigned for Al Gore.
However, most of the American public and the American media would rather view these persons as devout fundamentalist Christians demonstrating their deeply held religious beliefs; as such a view of the Westboro folks reinforces the anti-Christian bigotry and preconceived biases of the majority.
PURRFECKT!!
I got him on my Dead pool this year
Would that be something if somebody protest his funeral LOL!
“...hell he even campaigned for Al Gore.”
Well, Fred’s in for some real climate change shortly.
“Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.”
The ought to be a way to adopt this concept for the funeral.
“Jesus Loved You, Anyway” banners and flowers perhaps..
But what the heck do I know.
Luke 6:27-28 "But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
Right on Jim! I too do not wish Hell on anyone.
I’m in.
What a horrible horrible human being.
I agree. I have no desire to lower myself to his acitons.
Giving a one digit salute
?
Good!
Is the media still pretending those are Christians and not left wing astro turf?
I’m in for pushing him over “the edge”.
Satan awaits a new customer!
That would be a sure bet but, frankly, I think it would be even better if his funeral were to be left completely alone.
Won't happen though. Too many drama queens.
