You know Fred Phelps. You loathe Fred Phelps. You despise everything he stands for, like his family members infamous protests at soldiers funerals with their awful God Hates Fags signs. Theyve been a symbol for many years of the religion-based animosity against the LGBT community to the point that theyve been labeled a hate group and even the most fundamentalist Christian groups denounce his churchs activities....
/snip/...
Tonight, on Facebook, Nate (one of Fred's sons, excommunicated from the church) posted this:
Ive learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the God Hates Fags Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the church back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas. Im not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made. I feel sad for all the hurt hes caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And Im bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes.

I have seen posts from gay and lesbian people saying they should picket the funeral by the thousands, holding banners that say "We Forgive You".
What say you?
I say leave them alone and I’ll pray that Phelps finds God for real before he goes.
Matthew 6:5-6 When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners [a]so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
Turnabout is fair play.
I hope he finds his peace with God. It doesn’t appear he had any in life.

I don’t agree with picketing any funeral. Fred did it and I thought his actions were classless. They should try to be un-Fred-like.
“Theyve been a symbol for many years of the religion-based animosity against the LGBT community...”
Only because it is often conveniently ignored that this group is a fake church made up of a family of lawyers. Fred Phelps was a crusading civil rights attorney who, in middle age, decided to get a divinity degree, open his own church, and goad people into violating his civil rights so his family law firm, I mean “church” could sue the hell out of ‘em.
To say nothing of his very liberal politics and campaign donations, and his campaigning for Al Gore.
But, hey, when you can’t find a real example of bigoted Christians to hate, make up your own caricature of a hate group and that’ll be close enough for most people.
Thank you for this bit of good news.
I agree.
The road to Damascus is a bumpy journey.... Just ask Saul!
Kind like if you want somebody to picket your funeral go picket his. Myself I don’t like funerals so I only go for love.
i expect there’ll be a heat wave when he dies....more fuel on that big fire y’know.
What say you?
I say if gay and lesbian people say the forgive him, the 'activists' among them are lying.
The pack of wolves decided that their “alpha” had grown sick and weak and so turned on him.
I say erect an outhouse over his grave.
He might just need the
Rolling thunder bikers.
Amen.
Wow, gays turning the other cheek.
:P

He didn’t picket “gay and lesbian” funerals. He picketed the funerals of fallen soldiers.
If it was really about homosexuality he would have protested at Heath Ledger’s burial.
