KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- A Malaysia Airlines plane sent signals to a satellite for four hours after the aircraft went missing, an indication that it was still flying for hundreds of miles or more, a U.S. official briefed on the search said Thursday.
Six days after the plane with 239 people aboard disappeared, Malaysian authorities expanded their search westward toward India, saying the aircraft may have flown for several hours after its last contact with the ground shortly after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing.

11000 ft. at maximum takeoff weight for the 777-200ER.
I would think the takeoff distance for the lighter 777-200 model at MTOW would be close, if the aircraft was relatively empty (say, just a nuke and aircrew) at approximately 8,000 ft. of runway.
Just a guess, mind you, but that is likely the minimum for in/out flying--although there are others far more expert in this field than I whom I would welcome corrections from.
I haven’t seen anyone mention Yemen. Lots of bad folks there with bad intentions towards infidels. Some of the maps I’ve seen show Yemen as being in the range for landing this jet.
That's based on the assumption they were only fueled for the scheduled Beijing flight.
What if that assumption is wrong? Then that 2200 nautical mile circle (2532 of 8892 maximum statute miles) would need to be expanded to the point of irrelevance. They could pretty much be anywhere.
That’s a nice, neat circle. Isn’t the westbound distance stretched by the rotation of the earth?
You don’t have to wipe out the whole country. Just take down the eastern grid in late summer and let the riots do the rest...
Yemen would have been a 3800-mile flight from their last known position. A little closer than Mogadishu.
Of course, the Great Satan has relatively good coverage of Yemen as well as Somalia. Yemen was home to Mooselimb cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki, author of the instruction manual for the Boston Marathon bombings. He was killed by a Hellfire missile launched by a guy sitting in an office chair.
Somewhere in Bangladesh or Pakistan would seem to be a more discrete destination.
Is that a photo of Amelia? She looks gay to me, never saw a pic before.
That’s probably been checked several times. If that had happened it would of been leaked by now like everything else and then originally denied by the Malaysian government then confirmed later like several things in this investigation.
I would say the Americans that are there have checked that. If it had enough fuel to make it to say Iran or Pakistan then the USS KIDD wouldn’t be going to a specific area in the Indian Ocean. I think they now something.
I can only come to one fact and that is the plane was hijacked. If it was hijacked by the pilots then this plane has landed somewhere and is now in not to friendly hands. If it were someone else on the plane doing the hijacking they might assumed the plane had enough fuel to fly 8800 miles and may have run out over the Indian Ocean.
I think we will all know today or tomorrow.
From point they lost contact you can calculate where they are better by seeing what is in a circle of about 2400 square miles.
That’s 4 hours x 600 MPH.
Look for all landing strips in that circle and you probably will find that plane.
Correction on earlier post. It takes a 777-200 ER 14 hours and 25 minutes to fly 7598 miles. That’s ATL to DXB.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, but I know ... it's my own damn fault.
Maybe the plane's in Margaritaville.
ATL to DXB is only 13h50m, according to Wolfram-Alpha. 7600 miles, or 57 fiber milliseconds.
But I'll sit and watch on the internet, thank you very much.
Maybe, maybe not.
DXB to ATL. I just flew it a couple weeks ago.
How many times did you visit the on-board facility?
I'm doing well if I can last from BOS to DFW.
They’d need a lot more material.
On that one I take Tylenol pm when boarding and then 2 rum and cokes later I’m out for about 8 hours. I wake up and hit the facilities to freshen up and watch movies the rest off the way. I hate that flight.
If they have the means to steal a 777, I’m guessing they could come up with enough camouflage netting to cover it.
This would require a State to coordinate the landing and refueling. Plus they then can claim we didn’t do it when the bomb goes off. No one will want the retaliatory strike to hit them.
A state, or rogue authorities within that state or its Military...someone would likely have to be looking the other way...
