Warming oceans arent just shifting the migration patterns of some of our favorite fish; scientists say climate change may be stunting fish sizes too.
Widely consumed North Sea species, including haddock, whiting, herring, and others, have shrunk in size by as much as 29 percent over nearly 40 years, as water temperatures have increased between one and two degrees Celsius, researchers from the University of Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland, revealed in a study published in the April issue of Global Change Biology.

Global Varming?
Palm to forehead.. Ouch!!
Makes no sense. Every man knows that cold water causes shrinkage.
Intense fishing pressure or low food supply may also contribute to smaller fish, but lead author Dr. Alan Baudron says concurrent size declines in different schools of fish points to climate change as a smoking gun.
...
Not all species experienced a decline in size. Cod sizes were not affected, and female sole only shrank by 1 percent. Exactly why is unclear.
Meanwhile back at the ranch the revenuers are picking deeper into your pockets for “their” money.
Government enforced minimum size restrictions cause the unnatural selection of larger fish over smaller fish, rapidly leading to a smaller overall population.
As the oceans dry up fish populations will drop way off as the fish will be forced to decide Roe versus Wade.
Exactly opposite of the way catch and release sportfishing works out.
Smaller fish and the occasional trophy fish are kept while large average fish are generally returned to the water leading to a large average population.
I too am outraged !!! at my shrinking fish sticks!! just as I suspected
hmmm...
If the average temperature in the Jurassic period was 3 degrees C warmer than modern times why where animals much bigger? Warmer weather means longer growing seasons. Longer growing seasons mean more vegetation. More vegetation means more/larger herbivores. More/larger herbivores mean more/larger predators.
Warmer climates should mean larger animals not smaller.
Fish are being shrunk by estrogen pollution. It’s the #1 water pollutant in developed countries.
This is having big ramifications in Hollywood.
For the upcoming remake of Jaws, they have had to rename it, Nips.
Ridiculous. Aren’t we constantly being told that warmer temps bring algae blooms and an explosion in aquatic flora? that would mean MORE food for the fish. More food = bigger fish.
I think the globull warming fictionalists are having trouble keeping their lies straight.
OMG!!!
The fish in the Great Lakes must be huge by now...Are the lakes all completely frozen over yet. I know they were at about 90% two weeks ago. First time in....20 years?
More likely we have been fishing the area heavier over the last 40 years ... thus the smaller younger fish don't have time to grow into the larger older fish.
Your statements are true but the size of a species population as well as the average physical size typically increases with an increase in food supply.
Polar Bears are large creatures who thrive in cold climates but with the slightly warmer average temperature over the last couple of decades has resulted (contrary to AlGore's claim) in an increase in it's population and most likely in the average weight. Conditions which result in more food, i.e. warmer temperatures/longer growing seasons results in larger populations and larger animals than otherwise.
Yeah, right...they kept meticulous records of average individual fish size in a catch forty years ago. < /sarc >
The size differential may well be true, but likely due to more efficient harvesting methods thinning the schools more.
