Engine Data Suggest Malaysia Flight Was Airborne Long After Radar Disappearance, U.S. Investigators Say

Updated March 13, 2014 12:50 a.m. ET

U.S. investigators suspect that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 stayed in the air for about four hours past the time it reached its last confirmed location, according to two people familiar with the details, raising the possibility that the plane could have flown on for hundreds of additional miles under conditions that remain murky.

Aviation investigators and national security officials believe the plane flew for a total of five hours...

That’s what I’ve been thinking. My gut’s screaming that something nefarious is going on here. Strange and trying times we’re living in.

The pilot or copilot or someone in the cockpit could have shut off the transponder.

IF it went to Iran, and IF it is being outfitted with a nuke....Tel Aviv?

Hasn't Iran been bloviating recently about erasing Israel? Not like they don't always though.

Yep, massive speculation with few facts. Ask your BIL if Boeing monitors all aircraft at all times, or just for airlines that “opt-in” for maintenance/performance purposes. I doubt if Boeing monitors ALL aircraft equipped with ACARS that it has ever built!

Also, at home ACARS tracking! See: http://www.acarsd.org

ACARS can be VHF, HF or SATCOM delivered.

An airplane goes through a rectal exam before even being allowed within spitting distance of Israel so I dont see that one happening..Maybe Abu Dhabi, or India, somewhere where there is a big US population..a skyscraper or something..Doesn’t Abu Dhabi have the tallest buildings

Can they not backtrace these to their point of origin?

I don't think these signals can be used to locate a plane in space. These are short bursts that contain engine performance data--but no location ID.

Seems there's yet more confusion as to just when (or if) these signals were received and when they stopped--this info will yield the distance the plane covered between signals--or the time of the last signal will indicate how far the aircraft has traveled to that point in time..

Confusion is becoming institutionalized in this Asian search operation.

I think we (U.S.) know a lot more then we are letting on. While we pretend to let the Malaysia's have control, I think we're searching or know where this plane is, and if hijacked trying to not let on we know while deciding a course of action. (Clueless Obama) Some one at Boeing or with info on the engine information system is saying the plane flew on for 5 more hours let that out on their own.

That is what struck me as important. Boeing would know the engine characteristics of when the plane landed.

True, except it seems a lot could happen in the 30 minute intervals in between contacts. A signal could indicate 260MPH at 3000 ft. and then 30 minutes later nothing. But, if the story is accurate, a circular area could be defined, within which is the plane ... somewhere.

Why would Iran have to steal an airplane to outfit it with a nuke? They've got plenty of airplanes, including 747s.

This whole story started out odd when they announced it was a Boeing 777 that “crashed”.

There should be debris somewhere out there along its flight path. So far nothing and the story gets stranger and stranger.

I just sent a message to the Boeing test pilot I know. I happen to know my BIL is asleep at this hour.

Okay, the Rolls engine data piggybacks on the ACARS communications link, but it’s different data. I’ll bet it isn’t impacted by the cockpit ACARS controls.

Yup. Abu Dhabi now has the world's tallest building but why would muzzies attack that?

True about the Israel rectal exams. I thought it was the same for US flights. Yesterday a former ATC FReeper explained to me that ATC are too busy watching their transponders to worry about Un-ID'd aircraft.

I know that sounds odd but he explained it better than I can. Sill, getting that plane to the US would take AMAZING coordination.

However you are correct, Israel would be a long shot. How about Rome or another European city?

That's why I think it would be the work of extremist groups in Pakistan or places such as Somalia.

Yeah well I didnt mean a literal rectal exam but LOL you know what I mean..Israel would shoot it down..remember..if Flight 93 hadnt crashed in PA Bush would have had to make the painful decision to have it shot down, the probably target was either the Capital or the White House

I doubt we can or will get straight and honest information/answers from that new Muslim CIA director who by the way got a low level government job in Bush1 administration. Bush thought he would help the US withthe Saudi’s oil and friendship.

Thanks! In the meantime the “Wiki” entry on ACARS (Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System) is fairly complete: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_Communications_Addressing_and_Reporting_System
