Judging by the heroism Ukrainian military shows in Crimea - not that many. The material base is in ruins, but morals are high and civilian support is outstanding due to Russian aggression. I think, Putin expected exactly opposite.

You are only seeing what is happening in the west. Those guys will fight.

The information from the Eastern parts of Ukraine is suspect at best, as both sides are saying different things. Both sides are also using propaganda, which make it difficult to discern truth from fiction.

Those from the east or who are of Russian decent who are in the Ukrainian military are being let go or fired, and many of those units are being refilled by new recruits from the west.
