Feb. 12. 2014: President Obama, surrounded by workers, signs an executive order to raise the minimum wage for federal contract workers.AP
President Obama, flexing his executive authority once again, plans to order the Labor Department to expand overtime pay requirements to include millions more workers -- in a move likely to rankle the business community.
The president plans to make the announcement on Thursday at the White House, a senior administration official confirmed to Fox News. Though the administration has claimed previous executive actions had bipartisan support, officials are acknowledging that this particular move will anger business groups and congressional Republicans.
But the announcement would appear to dovetail with Democrats' election-year strategy of focusing on income inequality and the middle class.
The New York Times, citing White House officials briefed on the announcement, first reported that Obama will direct his Labor Department to require overtime pay for millions of workers currently classified as "executive or professional" employees.
The new regulations to the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act reportedly would mandate that businesses provide overtime pay for those who work jobs as varied as fast-food restaurant managers, loan officers, and computer technicians. Currently, businesses are prohibited from denying overtime to a salaried worker making less than $455 per week. The rules that Obama is proposing would increase that salary threshold, though it was not clear by how much.

His Highness the dictator declares another job killer.
“Bye, bye, Miss American pie” Obama is here and America died.
Again, this is what a majority of those who voted want. If they did not want it, they would have not voted for him.
I’m surprised more people don’t support reform for this; the fact that there is a threshold at all means the business community has placed a de facto cap on many people’s earnings while retaining the right to work them to death. Unpaid overtime has always been a way for an employer to screw workers; I like seeing companies forced to pay out when it is determined they were supposed to be paying people OT for years but didn’t.
If workers continuously feel screwed, they’ll continuously vote Democrat; we’re going through our own communist revolution now in response to the dire straits many Americans feel themselves in.
If they want overtime they can get a different job. Businesses budget a certain amount for salaries. They’ll just limit hours or fire people. If they can’t succeed without the labor they’ll change business models or go out of business. Either way the overtime leaches will be on unemployment.
The comments at the NYT are what you’d expect...
I say nothing will change at the corporate profit end. They will “adjust” accordingly and the people Obama thinks he is “helping” will find themselves worse off now than they where before.
.
There do not appear to have been any federal employees that are paid less than 10.50 and hour before comrade illegal came up with it’s eo.
Someone please inform me how this PUNK can assume the power to order wages?
And by the way, are ANY of his brain dead cultists ASKING WHY, if he DOES have the power, why did he wait SIX YEARS to do anything.
What a commie.
I used to work for a shop that paid overtime for anything over 8 hours regardless of total hours worked per week.
I liked it but I would never presume to think it should be imposed on other employers.
If they change the law eliminating exempt employees below a arbitrary threshold say like $40,000 per year a lot of people will lose their jobs.
Agreed. This is coming from a salaried worker who appreciates the difficulties running a business. I work when I need to and don’t mind putting in extra hours.
Just in the last month I’ve heard scores of former Obama supporters say they wish the’d never voted for him. Two were former big-time supporters andeven campaigned for him. They were definitely gullible low information voters whose decisions and votes are based on emotion and what they are led to believe.
On another note, I read that Holder’s DOJ has really been applying intense pressure on Arpaio because of the info he was going to release on The Chosen One this month. Looks like they really don’t want that info released’ however someone spoke with Arpaio personally on the 10th and he said more info is coming and they are continuing their efforts. I’m not holding my breath but I’d like to hear what mind-blowing info they have that allegedly goes far beyond just the fake birth certificate. I’’m guessing they found info indicating that he’s a plant from a foreign government...?
Its the 4th branch of govt in the fine print of the Constitution. Federal regulations of course. Time to reign in the feds, past time.
“If they want overtime they can get a different job.”
Not so easy these days (and companies know it); that response is simply met by fed-up workers with votes for the communists.
“If they cant succeed without the labor theyll change business models or go out of business.”
No; they go elsewhere to places where they can work people to death for peanuts. By all indications, any company that hasn’t already done so is working on it. I live in an area where mining was a big driver of the economy since prior to the American Revolution, and the conditions were bleak; we’re seeing the return of those same conditions.
If you take a job under certain conditions then you and the employer should live up to it.
When the rules change then so will the job.
As a business owner I’m amazed at how many people will sit and talk for long periods, be late, leave early and so on. yet I bet they’ll be the first to want over time.
If he sets the threshold high I see several employees in my company losing their jobs.
Isn’t that the truth!??!! Years ago, I became the supervisor in an office where the employees had 15 minutes breaks (not mandated by law) every morning and afternoon. And full freedom to get coffee, go to the restroom, chat, personal phone calls, etc., whenever they wanted to. I told them they had to decide between having the breaks or the “freedom”. They elected to give up the breaks.
