Colorado Republican Rep. Cory Gardners entry into the race to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Udall tightened the margins to almost zero, according to a new Rasmussen poll.
The two candidates are neck and neck, with 42 percent of respondents voting for Udall and 41 percent for Gardner. The margin of error is 4.5 percent.
Five percent of those surveyed preferred some other candidate and 13 percent were undecided.
The race is significantly narrowed from when Udall faced former frontrunner GOP candidate Ken Buck, the Weld County district attorney. The latest poll conducted before Buck moved into the race for Gardners seat had Buck trailing Udall 46-42 percent.
Udall has been on the defense since emails revealed that staff members of the Colorado Department of Insurance felt pressured by his office to walk back the number of Coloradans whose health insurance policies had been cancelled under the Affordable Care Act.
Hes also alone among Democratic incumbents in key states who opposed construction of the Keystone XL pipeline during a non-binding vote last year. Gardner sits on the House Energy Committee and has criticized Democrats who oppose the pipeline project.
A recent poll by Hickman Analytics, on behalf of Consumer Energy Alliance, showed that 66 percent of Coloradans polled wanted the pipeline built and 52 percent said they would be less likely to support the Democratic incumbent if its not.
On Monday, Udall staked out his position on climate change by participating with 28 other Democrats in an all-night session to give speeches on the issue.

A dead heat probably means the Republican is up by double digits.
Udall doesn’t realize it but Colorado’s dead voters are for climate change. Anything to warm up that cold, cold ground.
And Goobner Hickenlooper just gave away the principal commuting route between Boulder and Denver to an Australian outfit to do with pretty much what they please for 50 years, up to and including $28.00 round-trip tolls along the 20 mile route on U.S. 36 between Boulder and Denver, with side benefits like increasing HOV lane occupancy to 3 people in a car to use it, and anti-compete clauses preventing the state from improving nearby highways that might siphon a toll user or two from the Australian’s shiny new highway. Don’t think the ultra-lib Dem voters are going to be none too happy about what their beloved Democrats have been doing.
I’m amazed they can do that with a US highway. A state highway sure, but it seems like the US DOT would have something to say about privatizing a highway they paid for.
After the results in Floridah tonight. Udall is in trouble.
poor guy - his son won’t even be able to vote for him...
After all, I am pretty sure felons still have a little trouble getting ballots. Then again, maybe he just thought obamacare had a self serve prescription benefit too....
Actually, they are pleased, all in the named of Rocky Mountain Spotted Socialism.

Even the Progressives wake up a tiny bit when they have to pay $28.00 a round trip for the 20 miles between Denver and Boulder. The real question is if they can add two and two, given the fact that the enabling legislation to give away the highways like this was promoted and passed by the Colorado Rat legislature a few years ago without a single Republican vote.
