I think they’re looking way far away from where it is. Shockingly, it appears there is zero Air Traffic Control or something. Nobody seems to know if it was even close to being on course.
Shockingly? Look at the surrounding countries, not exactly economic powerhouses to pay for a system that doesn't have much tangible benefit for day to day living. ICAO is the 'controlling' authority outside of the US. There is an acknowledged radar gap in this area. Who's gonna pay to close it? Not just the equipment but the staffing.

That's why there is a reporting procedure. Flying under ICAO is light years from the FAA.
