Shockingly, it appears there is zero Air Traffic Control or something

Shockingly? Look at the surrounding countries, not exactly economic powerhouses to pay for a system that doesn't have much tangible benefit for day to day living. ICAO is the 'controlling' authority outside of the US. There is an acknowledged radar gap in this area. Who's gonna pay to close it? Not just the equipment but the staffing.

Nobody seems to know if it was even close to being on course.

That's why there is a reporting procedure. Flying under ICAO is light years from the FAA.

Yeah, I figured it was a “Turd World” thing. It’s a little frightening to think these planes just go in whatever direction and altitude they please, without somebody notifying somebody of the turn.

“Hey, I’m doing a 180!” seems like more than just a polite comment. This plane could be anywhere in the damned ocean.
