I would think if the phone was in water, it wouldn’t ring at all.

Also, I’m wondering about the black boxes; Doesn’t the FDR have a transponder on it? Have they tried picking up the ping?

Not unless they're designed for underwater use.

When you call somebody's phone you don't actually hear that person's phone ring. What you hear is a ring back tone generated by the carrier to simulate the phone ringing.

Depending on the carrier they could be generating the ring back tone while they're trying to connect the call?

I don't think phones "ring" the way they used to. I called someone the other day on their land line. It "rang" on my end but then an automated message played. The person I was calling was already on the line, so it never "rang". The phone company provides a ringing sound because it beats silence (and Muzak). I imagine cell phones have the same setup.

No they don’t ring but if it’s ringing she probably forgot to take it with her.

My take is that a cell phone is a computer connected to a computer.

The intermediate computer doesn’t know the cell phone computer is dead

Well, its like does a tree make a noise if no one is around to hear it when it falls...

What amazes me that a cell phone that is on will ring, back to the person who is calling that number...

If the phone is offline, it will roll right into voicemail...

Now that the media has let this cat out of the bag...Those forces holding these passengers will now turn off those phones rendering them useless for locating and or communications...

Which all of that has some extremely interesting coincidences...
