Rand Paul wins 2014 CPAC straw poll, Ted Cruz finishes a distant second
The Associated Press ^ | 03-08-2014 | Stephen Dinan

Sen. Rand Paul demolished his competition in the 2014 Washington Times/CPAC presidential preference straw poll on Saturday, winning 31 percent of the vote -- nearly three times the total of second-place Sen. Ted Cruz.

Mr. Cruz's 11 percent was still a big improvement for the freshman senator, who won just 4 percent in last year's straw poll. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson was third with 9 percent and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was fourth with 8 percent in results that signal growing discontent with the GOP establishment in Washington.

Indeed, CPAC voters now have an unfavorable view of Republicans in Congress, with 51 percent saying they disapprove of the job the GOP is doing on Capitol Hill. Just last year the GOP had a 54 percent approval rating, and in 2012 they held a 70 percent approval rating.

You are missing my point. Government, in and of itself, is a blank canvas. It’s the people who occupy the office.

Governments, like guns, don’t kill people.

People kill people.

We’re electing a president not a preacher. W was God fearing, social conservative but he was a big government guy.

While Rand is in my top 3 or 4 candidates, I think he unfairly benefited from the PaulBot contingent that always attends CPAC.

He is absolutely preferable to any one the rats run in 2016, but I think Cruz is my candidate.

I just recently made up my mind on this. I had been worried that Cruz was just talking a good game recently, then I saw information regarding writings he had done in college. He sounds like a real deal conservative.

There you go again...confusing "libertarian" with "Libertarian". I’m a libertarian and I don’t support anything you listed nor do I know anyone who is a libertarian who does.Where does this free boarder nonsense come in and the pro abortion agenda come from?

It comes from the Libertarian Platform. A bunch of wild-eyed, drug addled, baby-killing, packers (who want smaller government)

The "small l" libertarians need to come up with a new name for themselves.

The libertarian party that the libertarians created and operate perfectly reflects their libertarian ideals, the GOP does not.

Cruz can’t be on the ticket as he is ineligible to either office. He was born in Canada. I don’t think he is running anyway, he knows he’s ineligible if anybody knows it, he does.

Cruz is eligible, and far superior to Paul.

“Big government is by far the greatest threat to our lives and well being.”

No friend it is not. Big government is a symptom of the real problem. The “real” problem is the country continuing moving away from social/moral conservatism and continuing to pick bad leaders that move it that direction. Rand Paul and his ilk are NOT the solution. Cutting government, of itself, is NOT the solution.

IF we are going to “rally” around anything really effective in “saving the country,” it will be a leader (leaders) that is a real social conservative...backed by a party/people that are social conservatives first and foremost. Get that right, and the rest WILL fall into place. That is absolute fact.

And which libertarian party is that? Different from the Libertarian Party I assume.

Where is their platform?

What’s wrong with the GOP platform?

So far, you keep avoiding telling us if you are a real libertarian at all.

Are you a member of their party, do you vote for their candidates?
