SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine Crimea's parliament voted on Thursday to join Russia, and its Moscow-backed government set a referendum in 10 days, in a dramatic escalation of the crisis over the Ukrainian region that drew a sharp riposte from U.S. President Barack Obama.
Obama ordered sanctions on those responsible for Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine, including bans on travel to the United States and freezing of their U.S. assets.
He echoed European Union leaders and the pro-Western government in Ukraine in declaring that the proposed referendum would violate international law.

There was extreme civil unrest in Ukraine prior to this because a President was going against the majority view and siding with Russia vs the EU. This led to snipers shooting protestors. That doesn’t sound too far fetch from the guy in the White hut doing again and again what he wants against our wishes. I’m actually surprised people aren’t protesting and causing chaos here. I’m not so sure Obama goons wouldn’t also fire on protestors. At that point, if this country was headed for collapse, I’d like to have the opportunity as a Texan to be able to be independent.
And he got Bin-Laden. Don’t forget he got Bin-Laden.
And GM is still in business.
Putin laughs at Obama’s “phone and a pen”.
Indeed.
The Russian Federation currently has 21 regions called Republics. In 1954, when the Soviet Union transferred the Autonomous Republic of Crimea to the Ukraine Soviet Socialist Republic did they have the consent of the Russian Federation? What does autonomy mean? Can you imagine that if the United States was composed of 49 states and a Republic of Texas, that perhaps Texas was something special?
This is not like the case of the German-speaking Sudentenland of Czechslovakia which was never a geographically-defined region. The self-proclaimed Province of Sudentenland in 1918 was only a portion of what the German Empire later seized.
As far as I'm concerned, the status if Crimea is an internal Russian matter. However, if the Russians want to return Köningsburg and East Prussia back to Germany, I think we have a deal.
Whats he going to do?
Obama got really tough and unfriended Putin on Facebook.
Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev gave Ukraine a gift in 1954: Crimea, the strategically important peninsula on the northern shores of the Black Sea.
You would never see Ronald Reagan in the Oval Office without coat and tie. The current incumbent has no respect for the dignity of the office.
Probably: We must bow to the inevitable will of the Mexican people, and recognize that there is justice to their claims.
That was pretty much known in the beginning in 2007 when Obama had his hands around his nuts when the National Anthem was being played as everyone else had their right hand over their heart. This guy has never been my President nor will I address him as such. He an occupier.
Because the US entered into an agreement TWICE that the Ukraine was safe from Russia. You want to just say ah well our word means nithing when you agree to give up your self defense weapebs and then when youvget invaded... screw off. Japan should be very worried.
As a WSJ writer put it, It’s the JimmahCahtahization of Obammy.
The American reaction (and that word is important, by the way), is far too late. Putin outmaneuvered 0bama long ago. He has been pursuing a coherent and logical strategy regarding Ukraine for a long time now. In contrast, the 0bama regime foreign policy is limited to aiding foreign homosexuals in the fight against global warming. Other than that, we have NO foreign policy to speak of. I have compared it to playing electric football on the vibrating metal board. We are watching our pieces wander around and randomly bump into each other without any guidance or direction. There is no sense of the consequences of any decisions they make. And they are reacting two, three or four steps behind every major international event.
Putin is doing what he is doing for one very simple reason; Because he can. In fact, he must be sitting in the Kremlin with Lavrov laughing and saying “It can’t be THIS easy.”
In Russian, of course.
They offered; the Germans declined. It seems that Soviets used the Kaliningrad SSR as their toxic waste dump, and now nobody wants to clean up the mess.
I agree 100% but likewise I think if the majority Russian population in a somewhat separate Republic of Crimea has a right to secede if they so vote such.
I would hope that if things in this country became as chaotic as is the Ukraine with complete anarchy you wouldn’t hold it against Texans if they too made the choice of secession, freedom and liberty from an oppressive federal government?
Yeah, parliamentary vote. According to reports in European press the deputies voted for the legislation without actually reading it. Sound familiar?
Regardless of whether this is an internal "Russian" matter or act of war, the bottom line is that our regime didn't see it coming. Or did but didn't care because Putin isn't threatening repression of gay moslem Crimeans. It's fait accompli. Putin knows there is nothing we can do about it because he has his bases covered already.
Or, maybe in deference to the Russians I should say, Putin has his king covered, his bishop took to our rook and placed us in check, and it's covered by the queen. 0bama is wondering why all the pieces are not round and black.
Here’s an economics 101 from the old math and not that new common core crap which will show you how close we are to the chaos and collapse in the Ukraine.
Do you see those numbers that say growth in GDP is 2.4%. It is a complete fallacy and here is why. Our national GDP is 16 trillion $, of that the fed spends 4 trillion $. The Federal Reserve is infusing the economy with 85 billion/month which is over 1 trillion $. That infusion is 6% of GDP added to national GDP. If the economy grew at 2.4% GDP that means we lost 3.6% GDP.
All the money is going into the stock market to prop it up and give the illusion that all is wonderful.
Soon that guy with the SHTF webpage will be overloaded.
let’s keep borrowing our way to prosperity.
It makes me wonder who will own the Sea of Azov?
They going to divide it down the middle with Russia
owning three sides of it?
Interesting...
