The United States took another punitive measure against Russia Tuesday, announcing it would not participate in a G8 Summit scheduled for Sochi in June unless Moscow reversed course on Ukraine, Reuters reported.
The move followed an hour-long phone conversation between President Obama and West German Chancellor Angela Merkel that senior administration officials told Fox News focused on trying to construct a diplomatic off-ramp to get Russian President Vladimir Putin to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine.
The White House released a statement saying the two leaders agreed on the importance of de-escalating the situation, including through the deployment international observers and human rights monitors, and of initiating direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.
The U.S. will boycott the Sochi G8 summit unless Moscow reverses its position on Ukraine, Reuters quoted a senior administration official as saying.
Officials acknowledged to Fox News that Europeans are skeptical of sanctions against Russia that may harm European economies, but these allies are also concerned that without sanctions, the situation in Ukraine could escalate.
Pressed on any potential military action if Putin takes more territory, the officials said they still see no scenario involving military action of any kind
Earlier Tuesday, at a press conference, Putin insisted that none of his troops had moved into Crimea -- a statement that stunned U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
When informed by a reporter of Putin's claim, Kerry -- who arrived in Kiev on Tuesday -- smiled and said, "He really denied there were troops in Crimea?"

The horror.
...another punitive measure...
It sounds like “unexpected” doesn’t it?
Nee Ner Nee Ner Neeee Ner.
I’m sure they’re quaking in their Cossack boots over THAT threat!
NOT!
.
- Hey Obama - Is that a basketball in your Mom Jeans or are you just trying to impress Putin?
.
Actually, reports I have seen say that the entire G-7 is considering holding their meeting NOT in Sochi. In addition the Paraolympics which are due to start this Friday in Sochi have also said they may cancel their plans there. Man, all those $millions spent building up Sochi, and no one will want to stay there and spend money on hotels, restaurants, etc. The horror. How subject to business owner pressure is Putin? I hear the Russian economy is weaker than it was a few years ago. Anyone know more?
I truly think the American people have heart and nerve.
courtesy ping Jim, though one is probably not needed but you have none-the-less.
America under Reagan was an economic power with the resources to outspend the USSR so badly that they crumbled trying to keep up.
Obama presides over an entitlement nation on welfare or in part-time jobs. The only money they have access to is from a printing press.
We’re not going to bury anyone unless it’s under an avalanche of paper.
This is so astoundingly stupid. The greatest danger Russia poses to us is not invading Crimea, nor their stable of nukes, but being an instigator to drop the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency.
With our debt situation, this would be as bad as a tactical nuclear strike, and I am only exaggerating a little.
Therefore, pulling out to let them talk about how the once mighty Uncle (Sam) is really impotent ain’t exactly the most convincing bluff.
I am facepalming on this one.
obarry is getting beaten badly and instead of manning up he’s taking the ball and going home, only Putin is keeping the ball. obarry is in such a snit that he’s leaving empty handed.
“The greatest danger Russia poses to us is not invading Crimea, nor their stable of nukes, but being an instigator to drop the US dollar as the worlds reserve currency.”
Russia is the second biggest oil exporter and the biggest natural gas exporter in the world.
If Russia drops the dollar as worlds reserve currency, this can ignite a new, 2008 style, financial crash, both for America and the rest of the world, when we’re barely started to recover from the last one.
Today’s “leaders” aren’t even single A....I’d say whiffle ball.
- Cokehead Barack Hussein Obama Junior : “Tell Vladimir after my election I have more flexibility.” (I need more “space”)
- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev : “I understand. I will transmit this to Vladimir.”
“the Federal Reserve is able to flood our financial system with dollars without it causing a tremendous amount of inflation because the rest of the world ends up soaking up a lot of those dollars. But now that is changing. China and Russia have been spearheading a movement to shift away from using the U.S. dollar in international trade. At the moment, the shift is happening gradually, but at some point a tipping point will come (for example if Saudi Arabia were to declare that it will no longer take U.S. dollars for oil) and the entire global financial system is going to change.”

The real bitchslap comes when the rest of the G-8 goes to meet with Putin anyway, leaving Barry at home.
absolutely. This is what many Americans simply do not realize. There are gigatons of US Dollars sitting out there in foreign nations vaults because we have the world’s reserve currency.
If that changes, why would they keep them? And if they don’t keep them, guess where they are going to run? HOME, that is where! They are going to come flooding in from all over the world and it is going to make the Weimar inflation look like a walk in the park.
When we go screwing around with these nations who hold huge dollar reserves (and Treasury bonds which are dollar substitutes in essence), it is like sticking a loaded gun
Except Barney Fife doesn’t spend our money like a drunken sailor.
