COMPTON Reparations for African-Americans who endured 200-plus years of slavery in America will be among the topics featured at the second annual Reparations Day event March 6 in Tragniew Park here, organizers said.
The Rev. Meri Kha Ra of Krst Unity Church and Minister Tony Muhammad of the Nation of Islam will speak during the program, hosted by the Compton National Reparations Day Committee.
The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., also will include live entertainment and student essay contest winners from local area high schools.
Reparations is an internationally recognized principle of payment that a group or nation receives as a result of pain, suffering, damages or death.
The concept of reparations for U.S. slavery has gained momentum in recent years as the Washington, D.C.-based National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (N'COBRA) has aggressively argued that all beneficiaries of slavery including the U.S. government and corporations should financially compensate the descendants of former slaves.
In 2000, the New York-based Harper's Magazine reported that the United States owes African-Americans more than $100 trillion in reparations.
But the issue of reparations goes far beyond dollars, said Compton event organizer John Peoples.
What is Reparations? Repair. What is repair? Whatever it takes to make us whole, Peoples said. Reparations is not about money.
Tragniew Park is located at 2121 W. Alondra Blvd.

People pushing for reparations are racist. When they see white Americans they don’t see another fellow American, they see a person who owes them money because they are white.
What about the Americans who have ancestors who fought for to free the slaves? A large portion of the US population fought and many died to free the slaves. Apparently, they overlooked this little fact.

Not really. Dumb commercial.

i’m all for revoking their citizenship, and sending them back to africa one way, and never allowing them back into this awful country ever again.

If they were only beggars (mendicants). We could help beggars.
But they’re demanders. Demanders are never happy.

They’ve forgotten God, and sadly way too often so have we.
God set up a way to bless everybody, but there was a catch to it. We’d all have to be friends in order for it to happen.
Hate reigns instead.
Gospel is the only thing that can fight it.

it’s not a wonder why immigrants from certain places wind up running businesses that these people can’t start up and maintain successfully, themselves.

no, there are no former slaves alive today. if they were a slave just one day in 1865 the day before the war ended, they’d be 149 years old.

One can be slave to even crueler masters than the old plantation owners. One of those cruel masters is the imperative to be ghetto.
If they think acting white is so blasted bad, then why can’t they at least act like a recent voluntary black immigrant.
Time to cancel the credit card that’s paying for the pity parties.

The only actual reparation that could be done would be to share the gospel with black America afresh.
Preach it.

Reparations? OK, let's check the ledger here. Slavery, OK, I'll giver you that, your ancestors were dragged over here against their will. Even though it is better to live here than Africa, being the libertarian I am, no one should be forced to do anything against their will. Being a slave, well, I believe unless one consents to it be free will and no duress, no one should be a a slave. (There are people out there that may want to live a life of one for free housing, healthcare, food and so on)
Digressing, the United States had slavery until 1865 legally. That is a long time ago, IIRC, the oldest person living was born in 1897 last time I checked, so no one born as a slave is alive today that we know of although there is a small chance there could be a handful of children alive one generation away from it. I'm a Confederate apologist for the most part but since it is brought up everytime and it was one of many issues of the Civil War, 600,000 men on both sides shed blood to fight over slavery. That is part of your reparations on the credit side of the ledger
We move into the 20th Century now and as time went on, welfare programs were started, affirmative action various court decisions and so on. We add more to the credit side.
When LBJ came along, he started the War on Poverty in 1966, the year I was born. From the time I first came on this Earth to now, over 6 trillion dollars were spent on poverty and this adds a huge credit on that side of the ledger again. If we take the money and turn that into miles, that's enough for a one way trip to Barnard's Star. However, there is another cost too, what was beginning to be repaired, the Black family, has been decimated for two generations now. Also, all the crimes and drains on society is another hit on the credit side of the ledger. I think we are getting to the point where you, the ones for reparations, actually owe us, society.
Lastly, one of yours is President now. OK, he is half-White/half-Black, but in this society, perception is everything so I stand by my assessment along with the point where he favors that side of his heritage
Thinking about it, best case, we are "Even Steven," no one owes reparations and worse case with the increase in crime and a drain on society, the ones who want reparations owe us and/or society.
Well, I got to stop now, I got work in the morning and I have to work hard to pay "reparations." B-P

So, has Compton finally agreed to pay reparations to the rest of Los Angeles County?
Guess not.

I personally think the war was about whether we would be a nation with all power in Washington of some power in Washington and most in local and the states. Slavery was used to inflame the population but mostly not until the war was over.
Lincoln made it plain that he was fighting to save the Union. and the Confederates to save their way of life which included slavery but not for much longer.
650,000 Americans lost their lives so Lincoln could be president of the whole country. Two thirds of the deaths were Yankees but they had them to lose as they outnumbered the South more than 4 to 1 plus outnumbered them far more in the munitions of war. Also probably a million or more were maimed for life.
That cost was way too much to pay for what would eventually have occurred anyway if you think it was about slavery. Modern machinery was rapidly making slavery an outdated operation.

So, they’re seeking to extract reparations from a group of people who never owned slaves in their lifetimes — MOST of whom descended from immigrants who came into the country years later after slavery ended.
Right — taking money from people who had nothing to do with any of it AND giving it to people who also had nothing to do with it.
By all means, let’s just continue the victimhood and suffering. Let’s just keep spreading that misery. Heck, why not . ..works well for a LOT of people.

You may have missed "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" (2012). Vampires not zombies...and no reparations talks.
Not a classic, but a fun flick. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1611224/
