Ominous developments in Ukraine have prompted Prime Minister Stephen Harper to strongly condemn Russian military intervention in the country while urging President Vladimir Putin to withdraw his troops immediately.
In a statement issued following a cabinet meeting held Saturday afternoon, Harper said Canada is recalling its ambassador from Moscow and pulling out of the G8 process being chaired by Russia.
At the same time, Canada is recognizing the legitimacy of the new, pro-Western Ukrainian government.
"Ukraine's sovereign territory must be respected and the Ukrainian people must be free to determine their own future," Harper said in his statement. "We call on President Putin to immediately withdraw his forces to their bases and refrain from further provocative and dangerous actions."
He warns that should Putin push forward with military action, it will lead to "ongoing negative consequences" for Canada-Russia relations.
The cabinet meeting was called after Russian parliament gave Putin the green light on Saturday to use the country's military in Ukraine. Russian armed forces have seized control of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula.
Canadian cabinet ministers met by phone and in person well into the evening on Saturday, agreeing to join the United States and the United Kingdom in issuing strongly worded condemnations of the Russian actions and taking concrete steps to show they mean business.

Harper probably has more clout
He has more clout but much less power projection
Give Obama another decade and we’ll be pretty even.
All the demonstrations appear to be pro-Russian. Maybe that coup wasn’t such a good idea.
I am on the side of the elected Ukranian President. Harper and Ted Cruz are acting like Neocons.
Time will tell....!
I’m on the side of those that choose to be free...!

Sounds more like the democratic party.
It also helps to have 50+ mutual defense treaties with the US.
As for power projection, no other nation has 10% of the power projection potential of the US. However, that sword is getting rusty and Obama is letting it rust.
Probably the most accurate, video-game/RPG related reply I’ve seen yet.
Me too. It is just that East and West Ukraine want to be free from each other as opposed to perhaps the freedom you are thinking of.

You must be a Canadian liberal - only a Canadian liberal uses the word ‘Neocon’.
I know Neocon is an insulting term used by liberals to describe people on the right who are warmongerers/meddlers in the affairs of other nations. In this case it applies. I will call Cruz out when he is wrong (maybe the only time I remember him being wrong) every time.
Looks like Canada elected a Leader—we got a Rock-Star—Commie.
