Spike Lee’s Racism Isn’t Cute: ‘M—–f—– Hipster’ Is the New ‘Honkey'
Time Magazine ^ | 26 Feb 2014 | John McWhorter

Posted on 03/01/2014 3:05:35 AM PST by oblomov

It’s interesting that the director of the richest oeuvre of black films in the history of the medium doesn’t understand what the Civil Rights revolution was for. In his expletive-laced comments about the gentrification of Fort Greene during an interview at the Pratt Institute, Spike Lee seemed to think that what we Overcame for was to be grouchy bigots.

Basically, black people are getting paid more money than they’ve ever seen in their lives for their houses, and a once sketchy neighborhood is now quiet and pleasant. And this is a bad thing… why?

Lee seems to think it’s somehow an injustice whenever black people pick up stakes. But I doubt many of the blacks now set to pass fat inheritances on to their kids feel that way. This is not the old story of poor blacks being pushed out of neighborhoods razed down for highway construction. Lee isn’t making sense.

“Respect the culture” when you move in, Lee growls. But again, he isn’t making sense. We can be quite sure that if whites “respected” the culture by trying to participate in it, Lee would be one of the first in line to call it “appropriation.” So, no whites better open up barbecue joints or spoken word cafes or try to be rappers. Yet if whites walk on by the culture in “respectful” silence, then the word on the street becomes that they want to keep blacks at a distance.

In his interview with Anderson Cooper on Wednesday to clarify, Lee mentioned the controversy in Harlem some years ago over park drumming, which new white residents protested. Lee thinks whites were supposed to put up with being woken up on weekend mornings by the drums. That was a subtle issue.

John McWhorter is an interesting guy. On the one hand, he was an Obama supporter in '08 and '12, but is not on the left ideologically. He's written a set of insightful books on the trajectory of black America that were strikingly conservative in their style of argumentation and conclusions. He's an English professor at Columbia.

If there is such a thing as a neoconservative black intellectual, McWhorter would be it.

Sadly he voted for Obama because he’s BLACK!

I agree. I’ve got an audio series he did on “The Story of Language.” He’s knows all kinds of facts, and I like his sense of humor.

He can’t seem to see past Obama, though.

"So, no whites better...try to be rappers."

I agree, they shouldn't. Neither should Blacks or Hispanics or Asians or anyone else in the universe.

And of course if section 8 housing is forced on white neighborhoods , whites are also supposed to respect the black culture moving in and lowering housing prices..

You can’t win with aggrieved racists like Lee. No mater what, you are going to be in the wrong.

The racial grievance industry guarantees its existence with two conflicting demands that can never both be satisfied:

1. It is racist to have all-white neighborhoods, schools, businesses, sports teams, or organizations, therefore they demand that all of these be fully integrated so there are no “under-represented” minorities in them.

2. It is racist for whites to move into a black neighborhood, attend a traditionally black school, join a black organization or business. Doing so encroaches on “black culture.”

Since it is impossible to have all-black neighborhoods and at the same time have proportionate representation of blacks in all neighborhoods, it is guaranteed that the community agitators in this country will never run out of grievances to agitate against.

Yawn. Lee has never been held to an adults standard of conduct or thinking. He never will be.

Spike Lee has tons of money and everything he wants politically. Being angry about it says a lot about him.

A person could call me a “honkey” all day everyday and it wouldn’t offend me in the slightest.

Wow, looks like Spike Lee and I agree with something after all. I would also strongly encourage young people to invest in a belt and pants that fit.

As I recall, it was Bill Clinton who started the trend by putting his office in Harlem.

"Shhh, do you hear that? The drumming stopped. They're getting ready to attack." Every jungle movie ever.

Race relations have gone to hell in my lifetime. I remember the days of segregation and the good and bad attributes associated with such a system. I welcomed integration hoping it would resolve the injustices the black community had endured under segregation. It did not because integration was applied through forced legislative means by liberal politicians. Overnight, black and white communities were told how they should act and think regarding each other. No legislation can force you to accept another person if you don’t agree with their character and values. The only successful integration of the races has occurred between people of like character and values. Which brings us full circle except segregation is now defined in terms of liberal vs conservative values.

Conservatives of any race will always find in common values a sort of equilibrium between the races. Liberals will always disagree with conservative values in the name of diversification and by using legislative overreach hope to force their values upon those who do not agree.

All this to say, I don’t think I like Spike Lee or his character, value, and attitude. I don’t have to agree with him, or him with me. That’s the way it is. There is no racism or hatred intended. We just aren’t equal. Created equal but diversified by ideology.
