Ukraine pleads for U.S., U.K. help after Russian 'invasion'

The new Ukrainian government says it has been invaded by Russia, and has appealed for the United States and United Kingdom to protect it, as they guaranteed under a 1994 agreement.

The move came after pro-Russian gunmen seized both main airports on the Crimean Peninsula early Friday, a day after other militiamen took control of the regional parliament building. With gunmen in the building and the Russian flag flying from the roof, deputies appointed a new government and passed a motion Thursday calling for a referendum on the future as part of Ukraine.

Do you remember the Berlin air lift?

I did not say go to War. I said to invoke caution by Putin.

The Ukrainians are very close to Moscow ...

This is true of the eastern half of the Ukraine, mainly because the eastern Ukraine is populated by Russians. The Western half of the Ukraine (and ethnic Ukrainians) has a deep, bitter hatred of Russia.

Look up "Holodomor". The Russians starved the Ukrainians on a scale equal to the holocaust. Ukrainians like Russians the same way the Jews like the Germans.

Zero chose Biden and Kerry for that exact reason.

Both are totally incapable of doing anything. They are worse than Barney Feif. They will blindly tell any lie instructed, and when things go wrong no one will blame the dummies for getting it wrong.

This is by design.

Neither Biden nor Kerry will ever shine the light of truth on Obozo.

Message to new Ukrainian government:Not long before our 2012 elections Osama Obama whispered...yes,*whispered*...to Medevev that he wanted Vlad Putin to know that he'd be “more flexible” *after* the election.

So kiss any hopes of US help goodbye.

Only time will tell what help,if any,Europe is both willing *and* able to provide...but I wouldn't count on much there either (although I could be wrong).

No rational leader - and I include President Reagan - would seriously threaten force on what is, in essence, Russian territory.

So if Canada were to have a government of which we didn't approve would that give us the right to roll the tanks? Or is Canada essentially US territory?

"No rational leader - and I include President Reagan - would seriously threaten force on what is, in essence, Russian territory. The Ukrainians are very close to Moscow and very far from Washington, and I hope they have taken this into account in their calculations."

Agree . We should have far more geopolitical interest in what is happening in Venezuela which is in our backyard and a major oil exporter to the US. Yet we here almost nothing about Maduro and the national demonstrations and violence by government agents there.

Well the Soviet Union (formerly known as Russia) has 150,000 boots on the ground at the Crimea ‘border’. Anyone who thinks some of them are not in country is insane

That sounds like the best solution.

I wish we had made an effort to divide Iraq up into 3 countries. I suppose that the strategic southern zone might have merged with Iran. That wouldn’t have been good. However, when people just don’t get along with their neighbors, it is time to consider secession.

Of course, under the right circumstances.

I think the best deal would be Russia agrees to allow Ukraine to join the EU and NATO in exchange for getting Crimea and Donetsk region.

If I were the Ukrainians, I make that deal in a heartbeat.

Crimea legitimately should belong to Russia, it was only a drunken, impulsive decision by Khrushchev, back in the days when it really didn’t matter which Soviet Socialist Republic it belonged to.

EIther way, it’s none of our business, and we should let events take their course.
