Governor Jan Brewer (R., Ariz.) was correct to veto SB 1062, but she should have done it for a different reason: It did not go far enough.
Brewer faced tremendous pressure to kill this measure, which would have let religious business owners refuse to serve gay patrons. Many Americans understandably had a visceral reaction against this legislation that, fairly or not, was seen as a potential green light for homophobia. The fact that this bill would have allowed enterprises to spurn gay clientele due to religious liberty probably sharpened the burrs beneath the saddles of its foes.
However, what Brewer still should sign is a simple bill reasserting the personal, constitutional right of all Arizonans to associate with and without whom they please. By recognizing this right only for those with religious objections to homosexuality, SB 1062 would have created a small safe harbor rather than a huge port of individual liberty.

But they won’t because the governor is as useful as a kickstand on a submarine.
Writer is an idiot, the bill has not one mention of homosexuals but the fool accepts the media narrative

Interesting that in his long article and his many esoteric examples of associations, I didn’t see any regarding races or national origins or languages.
I’m in favor of what he’s promoting, but I didn’t see anywhere how he would roll back all the anti discrimination laws since basically that’s what he’s advocating.
Brewer is a political nut that wants to be in the PC crowd.
Read the whole piece, he makes an excellent point.

Exactly.
In a world where the Constitution is the law of the land, a bill like this would be unnecessary.
Individuals should have the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. To force anyone to serve someone they don’t want to is tantamount to slavery.
But they wont because the governor is as useful as a kickstand on a submarine.
Are you telling me that my job is nothing more than make-work? You are one cruel FReeper!
The federal Civil Rights Act prevents rolling it back. I expect Congress to add homosexuals to the protected categories under federal law soon - after all, they experience SOOOO much discrimination (YGBSM!). Unhappily, both of Arizona’s senators would vote in favor of doing so...
Freedom of Association died in the mid-1960s with the Civil Rights Act - as predicted by conservatives.
Arizona is almost a lost cause... I pray for them.
All I ask is that I have the same rights as a bearded Imam.
