I understand what they’re doing in collecting bacteria for culture but they might be better off keeping quiet about it.

Well, a germ is a germ is a germ. Soil cultures, which would have been more psychologically appealing, ultimately get their food from ickier stuff. It isn’t all sunshine and grass. I’d be pretty sure they took pains to be sure their cultures were as pure as practical; they didn’t just take a wad of crap and throw it in the sausage mix.
