Miranda Barbour, 19, is led out of the courthouse after her preliminary hearing, Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 in Sunbury, Pa. Miranda and Elytte Barbour, newlyweds who police said wanted to kill someone together were ordered Friday to stand trial on charges they lured a stranger with a Craigslist ad, stabbed him to death after he got into their car and dumped his body in an alley.
Miranda Barbour after her preliminary hearing in December.
This winter, America discovered a new Craigslist killera 19-year-old woman named Miranda Barbour, arrested in December along with her husband, Elytte Barbour, for the murder of a 42-year-old man named Troy LaFerrara, whom they lured in with a Craigslist sex ad. Now in jail awaiting trial, Barbour told a reporter in January that shes killed dozens of others she says she stopped counting at 22 all as part of a Satanic cult.
To be sure, there is a lot to take in at once with Barbours story, much of which inverts the serial-killer archetype as we've come to understand it: She's female and a teenager, and her story involves sexual abuse, Satanism, institutionalization, drug addiction, mental illness, bad boyfriends, and a two-year-old child now out of her custody. Based on the rough outlines of Barbours biography, she would have had to have started around age 13 to do what she claims to have done. Are her claims even plausible? Herewith, a sorting of the evidence: She's a serial killer:
Sexually abused at age 4 by her uncle, Barbour, who grew up in Alaska, was a repeated runaway and in and out of rehabs for heroin. At 14, she told her parents shed joined a Satanic cult. She said she was ushered into the cult by a 25-year-old man named Forrest whom she called her ruler and later is said to have impregnated her and helped her commit her first murder, holding the gun with her. Said her mother, Elizabeth Dean: She told me that this man owns her and she has to do whatever he says She said he branded her by carving a swastika on the back of her neck and his name on her thigh.
After three years in Anchorage, Barbour said she became a high-ranking member of the cult and a programmed killer. In her teens, she moved around between Alaska, California, North Carolina, and Texas. But Barbour claimed to have committed these murders mostly in Alaska towns like Palmer, Anchorage, Nome, and Wasilla, adding that she can still pinpoint on a map where you can find the bodies. Her victims, she said, were people "who did bad things and didn't deserve to be here anymore."
A friend of Barbours who met her in the adolescent ward of a behavioral health facility confirmed that she has discussed this cult for at least three years, saying she was in a gang made up mostly of men, many of whom raped her.
Barbour told Pennsylvania newspaper The Daily Item she doesnt care whether people believe her, that she has no remorse, and is not confessing for the attention only that she wants to tell her story to stop living a lie. Im telling you because it is time for me to be honest and I feel I need to be honest, she said.
Based purely on his gut reaction to Barbour during her jailhouse interview, the reporter she spoke with told CNN he believes theres at least some truth to her story. I believe she did this before, he said.
The local police are taking her claims seriously enough to investigate them. We are seriously concerned and have been in contact with the proper authorities, stays police chief Steve Mazzeo.
She's a fabulist: The co-founder of a support group called Seeking Alaskas Missing, which pays attention to unsolved murders, has said its possible, but it's not very likely presumably after examining the record of unsolved cases in the parts of the state where Barbour says she killed.
Alaska State Troopers issued a statement saying theyre not aware yet of any information implicating Barbour in any homicide aside from the one shes been arrested for.
Authorities where Barbour lived in North Carolina said they have no unsolved murders that might match up to her claims.
The prosecutor in the LaFerrara case has said he doesnt believe her.
Barbours father, Sonny Dean, said he doesnt believe Barbour either, and that hes surprised shes been implicated in the LaFerrara killing. Miranda lives in a fantasy world made up in her own mind, he said. (He also call her the most manipulative person I know adding that if she is convicted for the LaFerrara murder, hed gladly hold the hand of LaFerraras widow as his daughter is executed.)
But, seriously, she just might be a serial killer:
Elytte Barbour, her husband and co-defendant in the LaFerrara murder, wont comment on her claims, saying only that he still loves her. This, even after she implicated him in the LaFerrara murder in her newspaper interview, saying that he wrapped a cord around LaFerrara's neck while she stabbed him some 20 times.
The FBI is not discounting her outright. "Maybe she wants to look crazy as a way to gain sympathy, an FBI source said. "On the other hand, she may have killed before. We need to check it out."
Magus Peter H. Gilmore, self-styled high priest of the Church of Satan, told one central Pennsylvania TV news station that Barbour is not a member of his 45-year-old group. In this post 9-11 world, the idea that there could be a murderous cult out there
hows that going to escape law enforcement? he said. But of course, thats exactly what the high priest of the Church of Satan would say, isnt it?
I kind of pooh-poohed it until I read that her murders were part of a Satanic cult. Given that...I believe her.
Lucifer is the father of all lies.
He has her in his clutches. She is doomed unless, through the mercy of God, something changes.
I forgot to add: SHE must say “YES” to God.
Her own father says she “....lives in a fantasy world”, so it’s entirely possible she’s delusional. Of course, the cops have to check it out, but unless some physical evidence turns up to corroborate her story, I think LE is gonna be less than happy for being sent on an interstate wild goose chase at the suggestion of a headcase.
I wonder if bakers will be forced to bake cakes for one of her rituals.
Schizophrenia?
We can only guess at what SATAN promised her for all that murder and mayhem. Whatever the promise, it will cost her the ULTIMATE price: her immortal soul.
“Natural Born Killers” is more inspired by Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate’s little cross-state murder spree. And yes, I think Caril Ann certainly had a hand in at least one of those homicides, despite her denials.
It’s an interesting movie.
It’s a movie that glorifies killing for the sake of love and self preservation. Very much a Bonnie and Clyde remake but with a very sick media twist.
Natural Born Killers.
Unreal ? Yes.
A reflection of what the “Media” wants ? Yes.
IMHO, there seems to be an effort among the media in our country to create “art” that will “create life”, so they can create a “life that imitates their Art”.
You are 100% correct.
Tomorrow the SON OF GOD opens in theaters. I am going to see it on Saturday. One only need to juxaposition the two people to realize the enormity of God's goodness compared to the sinful, mindless evil of a hell-bent soul and her "master"--Satan-Lucifer, the Father of all lies, of all evil.
May God have mercy on their souls...and those who produced such a SICK movie.
So, you disregarded her claims until you saw that they matched up with some existing beliefs of yours. That’s called confirmation bias. Gotta be careful with that.
There are NO "natural born killers." Killers are produced by people who sell their souls to Satan.
If you want to read about how ONE was PRODUCED, read about Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo (Russian: Андрей Романович Чикатило, Ukrainian: Андрій Романович Чикатило; 16 October 1936 14 February 1994).
He was a bed wetter and his mother beat him relentlessly, throughout the day, all of his young life. His father did/said nothing.
He was a Soviet serial killer, nicknamed the Butcher of Rostov, the Red Ripper, and the Rostov Ripper, who committed the sexual assault, murder and mutilation of a minimum of 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990 in the Russian SFSR, the Ukrainian SSR and the Uzbek SSR. Chikatilo confessed to a total of 56 murders and was tried for 53 of these killings in April 1992. He was convicted and sentenced to death for 52 of these murders in October 1992 and subsequently executed in February 1994.
Chikatilo was known by such titles as the Rostov Ripper and the Butcher of Rostov because the majority of his murders were committed in the Rostov Oblast of the Russian SFSR.
There’s no way this girl is a multiple murderer. If you read the account of the one murder we know she committed, they killed the guy in their own vehicle, by stabbing him to death. Only after the fact did these geniuses realize that the huge amount of blood in their own car was not good, and then they frantically tried to clean it up with cleaning supplies, and failing that, purchased seat covers (!) to try to hide the evidence.
These are not the actions of someone with even a little experience committing homicides.
You mean the "confirmation bias" of SATAN/LUCIFER, the father of all lies? Well, YES.
I "gotta be careful" to stay away from Lucifer, the father of evil/of all lies. Or do you believe in Flip Wilson's "the Devil made me do it"?
Satan lured them; they said YES to Satan and NO to God.
It's not that complicated, is it?
You may be right. OR couldn't they just have a very sharp "learning curve"??
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. My guess is that it will be UGLY.
“You mean the “confirmation bias” of SATAN/LUCIFER, the father of all lies?”
No, I mean the psychological phenomenon of confirmation bias, which is regarding information more favorably if it confirms your existing beliefs. Just because you believe in Satan, and the evil that he promotes, does not mean that this girls’ story should become any more believable to you than it was before you read that part. Her story is full of holes, so you should be able to see she is just a liar, whether or not her lies dovetail with some of your own beliefs.
I sincerely thank you for being you.
I don’t know what it takes to turn our great nation back to its founding.
We are a Cristian Nation.
We can make “Son of God” the most successful movie of the year and we will sit back and wait. We wait again for a leader. We wait again for something that will reach the masses. I watch movies like this and I’m touched, moved to establish a stronger relationship with Christ.
But nobody else cares.
There is an extraordinary amount of indifference in our society that is desperate to get along.
Even among Christians.
It’s fear. Not uncertainty, as a Christian, but fear of what others will think of you.

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
I just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
“Son,” he said “Grab your things,
I’ve come to take you home.”
To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Tho’ my life was in a rut
“Till I thought of what I’d say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
“Hey” he said “Grab your things
I’ve come to take you home.”
(Back home.)
When illusion spin her net
I’m never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don’t need a replacement
I’ll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
“Hey” I said “You can keep my things,
They’ve come to take me home.”
“You may be right. OR couldn’t they just have a very sharp “learning curve”??”
No, murderers that are this dumb get caught very quickly, just like these two did.
