Is Cruz out of Control? (Absolutely not)

What you think of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) depends on who you believe.

Is the freshman senator on an "ego trip," putting himself before country (Dana Milbank, The Washington Post), or is he standing on his principles (Cruz's conservative supporters)?

ABC chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl says Cruz is "so hated" among GOP senators that "he's going to need a food taster."

In a telephone interview with me, Cruz acknowledges he would not win a "Mr. Congeniality" contest if it were up to the Republican leadership in the Senate, but contends that they and some of his colleagues are out of touch with the will of the people: "The reaction in Washington is the polar opposite of the reaction outside Washington," he says. "People across the country are frustrated that so many elected officials in Washington are not listening and ignoring the concerns of the people."

I ask him about his controversial move last week to change Senate rules by requiring 60 votes to pass the debt ceiling increase, instead of a 51-vote majority. Cruz responded, "...there is no universe in which I would be willing to consent to allow (majority leader) Harry Reid to raise the debt ceiling with no spending reforms on only 51 votes. The reaction from a significant number of my colleagues was considerable anger and dismay."

Cruz rejects the notion that a vote against raising the debt ceiling would have produced another government shutdown, favoring Democrats. He points to history: "The last 55 times the debt ceiling has been raised, Congress attached significant conditions to it 28 times. Virtually every major spending restraint Congress has passed has come through the debt ceiling." As two examples, he cites the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Balanced Budget Act, which, according to its co-author Sen. Phil Gramm, was "the first binding constraint imposed on federal spending" and last year's Budget Control Act, nicknamed "sequestration."

How does Cruz expect to get the reforms he wants without a Republican Senate majority, not to mention a Republican president?

"We have the same number of votes we had when we got the Budget Control Act," he maintains. "If we had stood together and voted no, we could have blocked this from happening. ... We would (then have sat) down and negotiated a resolution, a compromise, with some meaningful spending restraints."

What about the Republican and larger Washington establishment and the Tea Party? The prevailing wisdom is that the Tea Party harms incumbents, replacing them with conservative purists, who then lose the general election.

Not true, says Cruz. While acknowledging that Tea Party candidates Christine O'Donnell (Delaware) and Sharon Engle (Nevada) lost to Democrats in 2010 races that stronger candidates might have won, Cruz says the overall record of Tea Party candidates is far better than the establishment's record. He cites Florida, where Marco Rubio beat Charlie Crist in a primary despite Crist's support from the GOP establishment. Cruz says Rubio was the right candidate given Crist's post-election switch to the Democrats. Crist is now running for governor as a Democrat.

Cruz offers other examples in which Tea Party candidates won over hand-picked establishment candidates: Pat Toomey over Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania; Mike Lee over Robert Bennett in Utah; Rand Paul over Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's candidate, Trey Grayson, in Kentucky. He might add himself to that list. "Every one of these," he says, "was elected by the Tea Party against huge opposition from the establishment and all of their money."

Can promoting such candidates win back the Senate for Republicans in November? Cruz says, "Many of the critics are saying the path to victory in November is for Republicans to put their heads down, don't rock the boat, don't take any stands. ... I think history has proven that that is a consistent path to failure. The way to win in November is for Republicans to take principled stands. ... That doesn't mean we need to fight on everything. You pick your battles. ... When Washington politicians retreat on every issue, it demoralizes grassroots conservative activists who are the key to winning in November."

Given the results of the last two presidential elections and their own poor record, the GOP establishment may want to put themselves on "Cruz control."

In our soundbite news society, a catchy phrase, such as “Do Nothing RINOs,” often obscures the basic root causes that the soundbite summarily describes.

For example, this recent TV quote by Senator Cruz is worth examining as follows:

” - - - And he said — Mr. Sowell said you should fight on fights we can win. I agree and if Republicans had stood on the debt ceiling — we had the votes to insist on meaningful spending reforms. - - - “

* The author of the thread article claims that “Cruz shot back at Sowell.” which can be substantiated if the assumption is made that Cruz and Sowell have differing points of contention.

* If, however, one looks for similarities between the two men, then this part of the above quote “ - - - Mr. Sowell said you should fight on fights we can win. I agree - - - “ can be used to substantiate that Sowell and Cruz are in agreement about what fights should be fought.

* If the assumption is made that both Sowell and Cruz are afflicted with the same RINO terminal disease of fighting only the fights that can be won with no risk, then Cruz in no better than any other loser, obsolete RINO.

* If Senator Cruz does not place a higher value on fighting battles with overwhelming odds that favor the enemy, then his only choice is to cede the field of battle to the enemies of the US Constitution, as the Congressional RINOs have done for the last five years.

* A successful defense of ones position only requires one third the force of the attacking offense, according to Military Science. IOW, it takes less strength to defend than it takes to attack.

* Since the Congressional RINO strategy has been, for the last five years, to always stay on defense, then what evidence exists that the Congressional RINOs have inflicted ANY damage on the attacking enemies of the US Constitution?

* There is not even evidence of serious DISCUSSION of use of their primary weapons: House Special Inspectors and Impeachment!

* The field of battle is littered with the bloody, cowardly footprints of the “Rapidly Retreating RINOs” and echoes of them screaming in terror: “We can’t do anything because we do not have control of the Senate and White House!”

* If our sorry Congressional RINO should very soon choose to defend the US Constitution by fighting many defensive battles whose goals include decimation of the enemy by fighting a war of attrition, then we, the disgusted voters, would have our FIRST reason to vote for an incumbent Congressional RINO.

* Senator Cruz may yet prove that he understands the value of a continuous series of battles in a war of attrition, but RINO intellectual Thomas Sowell only understands the safe, cowardly value of continuous retreat.

* As for a lesson from History, Thomas Sowell has chosen to ignore the historical fact that General George Washington fought mainly battles that did harm to the British enemy.

* The Father of our Country successfully fought a War of Attrition.

* So far our sorry Congressional RINOs have proven themselves to be unworthy of following General Washington’s proven method of Victory.

hopefully as a result of his move last week, Corny will be knocked into a runoff....then defeated.

then he will have one fewer Senator who hates him.

One by one....cleaning up the SEnate, that is, until he becomes President for 8 years. Then Chief Justice for 40.

Ted Cruz has a mission and he is not deviating from the pursuit of it, IMO.

Thomas Sowell used a flawed comparison against Cruz. Cruz’s foes are far more like the British Red Coats — against whom Washington was relentless — than his fellow country men.

We would (then have sat) down and negotiated a resolution, a compromise, with some meaningful spending restraints.

Well intentioned, but probably not.
Read your history, Senator - it's only a year or so old.

Step 1. Obama crosses his arms and says he won't negotiate.
Step 2. Reid crosses his arms and says he won't negotiate.
Step 3. The sycophantic media raises a fuss and says the Republicans want to kill children and cause the country to default.
Step 4. Repeat steps 1. through 3. until the Republicans capitulate and give the Democrats everything they want.

It's been proven - it works. Why would they change now?

Contrast this editorial with the “Surrender Monkey” editorials by Dr. Sowell.

This IS the article that Dr. Sowell should have written.

I predict that Mc Connell will be reelected and the Republicans will gain the majority in the Senate and Cruz’s committee appointments will be the Sanitation and Sewage Disposal Committee. He can really do a lot for Texans from there. Of course, I guess it doesn’t matter what he does for Texas, because he will be busy campaigning for President even if it is to represent a third party that will help the Democrats (Remember Ross Perot).

Just look at that white tie and those shades, and that little wave to “his sheep”. He looks more like a Drug Lord than a Presidential candidate.

That's true with the present leadership. Our side has stated at the start of each standoff since 2011 that they will fold. In the 90s, our side held out and got concessions and also set the table for tough negotiations in welfare reform, tax reductions and more. Eventually Bob Dole caved, but gains were made.

This crew? It is clear from the beginning they will communicate poorly and cave early.
