I visited that area with my sister and our mother back in 2006. It’s beautiful there.
(But the roads were scary as hell).

True story: I was in Spruce Pine, NC, trying to get on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Entrance was closed, so I followed the detour sign and down we went. Down a steep, narrow, twisty road with no shoulder and no place to even think of turning around. It was so steep that all the stuff in the back of my van was sliding forward and I had a real fear that I would burn up my brakes. Then I saw the sign:
ROAD IS WORSE AHEAD

Ditto that, five years ago....I was also very relieved to get out of the Smokies and onto solid flat ground.

Love me some white-knuckle mountain roads...some of the best anywhere can be found in East Tennessee, western North Carolina, and southwest Virginia. Switchback heaven. :-)
