All signs indicate Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer will likely veto politically-charged legislation that supporters say promotes religious freedom and opponents contend discriminates against gays and lesbians.
Brewer did not signal her intention either way in an exclusive interview with CNN on Monday at the National Governors Association meeting in Washington.
"I can assure you, as always, I will do the right thing for the state of Arizona," she said.
But some Arizona Republicans who know her well say they are confident those comments mean Brewer will almost surely reject the bill that is generating nationwide controversy.
The Republican-led measure would allow Arizona business owners to deny service to gay and lesbian customers as long as they assert their religious beliefs.
Brewer is scheduled to return to Arizona on Tuesday, and a source tells CNN those familiar with her thinking say she will likely spend at least one full business day in the state before acting.
"I'm going to go home, and when I receive the bill, I'm going to read it and I'm going to be briefed on it. We have been following it. And I will make my decision in the near future," Brewer told CNN.
She has until Saturday to sign or veto the bill. If she does nothing, it automatically becomes law.

Gay bakers should be allowed to bake a cake for a group with the message GOD HATES FAGS written on it?
Correct. Jim Crow laws, this bill is sometimes compared to them, made it illegal for white businesses to sell to blacks whether they wanted to or not.
This bill does nothing of the sort.
Mammon always wins until our Creator comes again. Events are going to unfold as already foretold.
Seems completely idiotic to me and I’m at a complete loss as to why this bill is necessary. It’s like they’re performing hari kari just to affirm the status quo. Or am I missing something?
Right. First of all it's about business or individual rights to discriminate or choose, not state laws requiring segregation. Second, it's about gays not blacks.
The badly and hastily written Post-Civil-War 14th Amendment was aimed at doing away with state forced segregation of former slaves - blacks. That was this amendment's ONLY purpose which was confirmed in the 1873 Slaughterhouse cases. But in the 20th Century, activist courts seeking to enlarge government power have sought to continually expand the original intent of the amendment. But there is NOTHING in the Constitution allowing the federal government to interfere with an individual's freedom to discriminate or choose.
Why do we keep talking about the federal government here, I ask myself? Dang man, this is a state issue in Arizona. Maybe it's because the federal shadow looms so large these days that states are intimidated by the threat of the feds interference. But the feds have no constitutional authority to interfere here whatsoever.
RE: Seems completely idiotic to me and Im at a complete loss as to why this bill is necessary
This bill would not have been necessary had the judges from on high not ruled in places like New Mexico, Colorado and other places that Christians who refuse to do photographs or bake cakes for gay weddings are to be punished. FINED or JAILED or both.
Not one dimes worth of difference.
Well, the 9th and 10th Amendments seemed dead and frankly the states did nothing to hinder that.
Ryan is/was (depending on what you read and who you believe) for amnesty. his budget was a baby step in the right direction but not near close enough to what is really needed.
Is he a Rat? No. Is he the best of the best of the best? hell no.
“very electable” is rino buzz words. He’ll get painted with the same brush as Romney by the media.. He WILL loose.
We don’t need “very electable” we need someone with principals who is a leader. Not a follower.
I’m not a Cruz/Palin or nothing kinda guy. But a guy that has in the past got the GOPe nod is NOT the type of guy I am willing to support.
Have those cases been appealed? (I genuinely don’t know)
If she signs it, or lets it stand..
Will McCain leave AZ??
Might be worth it AZ.. Think about it ;)
Well, as far as I'm concerned they are very much alive. I don't know where all this is going but if necessary, by God's grace I will fight to the death for freedom.
“I would have signed bill as soon as it crossed my desk.”
“I agree with Impy that I’d sign the bill without a moment’s hesitation and I’m surprised Brewer is feeling pressured by them. I’ll be very disappointed if she caves on this.”
Yes.
Like I’m wont say, when there’s a question, the answer is Einsatzgruppen.
I am not to claim to be an expert on the subject but they are playing that angle up.
I know I am always the party pooper.
My comment is :”I am sure glad I am not her”
I am unhappy that the gay righters will be celebrating yet another victory over us ‘closed minded homophobes’
Cant our side win any??
“Cant our side win any??”
Apparently, no.
its hard to win when our side keeps fumbling the ball and the other side gets all the assets.
I will repeat what I posted earlier on another thread.
GOPs and even so-cons have been depending on not very good arguments like we believe, which has recently morphed into religious freedom
while libs have been making a case that gays are born different through no choice of their own and their orientation is identical to race.
Example of a real argument: No laws refuse to marry gays to gays as long as they are the opposite sex, or even to marry gays to heterosexuals. That is why this is not the same as black-white marriage discrimination.
I never see a Republican or a so-con on TV taking the above argument apart.
The only so-con issue related approach I have seen that impressed me is that ‘Little Sisters of the Poor’ commercial, that is dynamite.
No amount of politics could get this puppy to stay together without God being called into the picture by the gang whose names are at the TOP of the Constitution. “We The People.”
God has been too much window decoration, too little sight for the blind.
Its hard to disprove a negative however control of the country's laws and by extension the courts is dependent on elections, and since there are so many voters who are not Christians, and their are many who are lib Christians, ‘God says you must do it’ is not an effective tool.
You don't fight guns with water pistols.
