Cape Coral woman Robin Speronis has been relying on solar panels and treated rain water to survive.
A Florida woman who has been living off the grid for about a year and a half was told that she has one month to "plug in" or deal with the authorities.
Cape Coral woman Robin Speronis doesnt have any city power or water running into her house and relies on solar panels and treated rain water to survive. "I'm choosing to live without being dependent on the system," she told NBC-2.
Officials from Cape Coral Code Compliance met with Speronis and her attorney about the situation last week.
"When this was brought to my attention I felt like I had to act. I felt like Cape Coral was intruding in the woman's lifestyle," said Todd Allen, Speronis' attorney.
A magistrate ruled that Speronis was guilty of not being hooked up to a water supply that had been approved by the town.
"What happened here is people don't talk to us or cooperate. We don't communicate then we are forced to use the legal tools at our disposal," said Frank Cassidy of Cape Coral Code Compliance. "In the whole scheme of things, its no different than the hundreds of cases we deal with all the time.
Speronis has indicated that she doesnt plan on changing her lifestyle.
"I don't have to justify my life. They have to. That's the way our system of justice works. They have justify it. I don't," Speronis said.
Q: “I dont get it. Why does the town care if she is hooked into their system or not?”
A: She’s an upstart and they want TOTAL control over the population. You can bet that just by this article, many other folks will be thinking of trying the same thing. -Giving the gubmint LESS than ultimate control.
I too am thinking this is why the city is screaming foul ... Could be wrong though.
hummm ... the city has no standing if her property rights are upheld. It will cost her to prove her point ... may she countersuit.
There is already precedence. Some areas you cannot collect rain water. Areas with wells typically have to meter the well in some areas.
Most people I know don’t get that. It is never yours. Stop paying taxes and see how long you own it.
“Speronis was guilty of not being hooked up to a water supply”
Charged with being a non-hooker
Next thing you know - she’ll believe she’s exempt from having to purchase government approved “health insurance”.
I live in PA and have a perfectly working septic system on a couple acres of land (septic system is rated for another 15 years of use easy). I have been fighting getting "tied in" to the sewage system Fast Eddie (Ed Rendell's pet project in PA when he was governor) approved for more than a few years now (the system did not exist before I purchased my property). My nearest neighbor is 50 yards from me. We have zero suburbia's around where I live (farm lands across the road). But the township is trying to force me into it for both control and $$$$$$$. Some people in my area lost their homes because they couldn't come up with the "tap in fee". It was and is disgusting how property owners are being rail-roaded all over the country by out of control counties, cities and townships.

I rented a house once that had well water and city sewer. They metered my well so they knew what to charge me for the sewage. Weird.
She could poop into a paper sack, light fire to the sack on their porch, ring the doorbell and run.
She’s got a blog and her own radio show. So she can carry this fight for a long time. Good on her.
Plugged in does not mean hooked up.
Is this just a water issue? septic tanks can contaminate.
I 100% guarantee tge city would go away if she pays the minimum monthly base hookup charge. What if she hooks up and doesn’t pay the monthly bill? Wiol tgey shut off her power and water?
LOL
do the just want the meter there? or do they want her to actually hook up and use?
The town wants hr money. Nothing more than that. They feel she is cheating them out of their share of her resources. Around here they can’t raise taxes so they raise fees for stuff like water and sewer.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$....................
Probably a septic tank.......................
