Have-A-Heart Traps, at Home Depot or Lowe’s. I’ve used them for pesky squirrels in a garage, who made a helluva mess with sticks and leaves, making nests...

What do you do with them once you’ve trapped them?

Have-A-Heart Traps, at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

I had an experience a few years ago that bears repeating here.

I had a problem with a family of raccoons who took up residence in and around my home. I decided to "relocate" them one by one using a Have-a-Heart trap. But I couldn't find one (I live in NY). I finally found one online (in CT) that I could pick up immediately. I decided to call first to make sure that they still had the trap in stock.

The person on the phone asked what I was going to do with the trap. I described my circumstance and my intent to "relocate." He told me that in NY State, if you are caught relocating an animal you may be fined up to $1000.00. The reason? Rabies! Relocating, what may be a rabid animal, contributes to introducing rabies into a new area that was previously unaffected.

I went to Plan B.
