Connecticut gun owners revolt: Widely flouted registration law puts legislators in a bind
Washington Times ^ | February 19, 2014 | Masthead Editorial

Laws are more than just symbolic gestures. Connecticut's General Assembly must come to grips with this truth before its recent effort to “save lives” ends up destroying them.

State law enforcement officials are now in the difficult position of dealing with one of the most widely flouted laws since the end of the 55 miles-per-hour speed limit and Prohibition. If it’s really serious, the state will have to find space to imprison 300,000 residents for the next five years.

The first article of the Connecticut Constitution couldn’t be more clear. “Every citizen has a right to bear arms in defense of himself and the state,” it says.

Busybodies at the Capitol in Hartford decided that “every” doesn’t really mean every, and it banned the semi-automatic rifles that would be most useful in defense of the state. As of Jan. 1, owners of arms that have a menacing appearance had to submit registration paperwork to the state.

Only about 50,000 did so. There’s no way to know how many “assault rifles” remain unregistered, but the best guess is that the new “gun safety” law instantly created 300,000 felons.

Eager to exploit the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, easily frightened lawmakers rushed to add yet more hurdles to gun ownership in the state. Those wishing to possess a pistol already had to pay fees, take tests and fill out paperwork to obtain a firearms-purchase permit.

Separate permission from the state was required just to buy ammunition in a process that must be repeated every five years. Bearing arms outside the home requires another permit that the state may, or may not, issue at its discretion...

300,000 is no small army. Let them start the shooting shooting first. Make sure there are multiple videos, and that you can't be shot. This "assault weapons" and high capacity magazines BS flies in the face of Heller.

Child's play historically. At least Connecticut doesn't have to factor in the messy logistics of corpse disposal. yet.

The law is patently unconstitutional and almost nobody is going to comply with it. Perhaps the state legislature and governor will now read the constitution they’re sworn to uphold, defend. ?

The General Assembly must do what Congress did in repealing the speed limit in 1995 and the states did in ending Prohibition in 1933. If it saves just one life, it’s worth it.

Nicely played. "Set an example" SWAT raids are going to get somebody killed, and the likelihood is that it won't even be a gun owner. None of the players quoted in public, however, seem to be inclined to back off even a single step. And the gun owners don't seem to be inclined to do anything at all in obedience.

What is most amusing about the affair is the surprise and disbelief on the part of the legislators that people aren't willing to give up on a fundamental right simply because the high priests of legislation have waved their magic wand. These guys are King Canutes who (unlike Canute) actually expect the tide to recede at their command. People that disconnected from reality are just the sort to start something that will fill body bags and then contentedly blame somebody else.

“The law is patently unconstitutional and almost nobody is going to comply with it.”

Nobody is complying with Obamacare either.

I do tax prep and this year we are asking questions about it.

The reaction (even from those whom this law was intended to help) is pretty much equal to making the sign of the Cross to a vampire: just keep that evil stuff away from me.

Yep. Selective enforcement is usually described as "a tool" for one social campaign or another.

There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them.

As a leader O is about as complete a failure as is imaginable. Regardless of his politics.

A legislature that would even consider passing such an anti-American “ law” should not just be put in a bind, it should be imprisoned forthwith.

“As a leader O is about as complete a failure as is imaginable. Regardless of his politics.”

Agreed and well said.

And for this monstrous, monumental, mind-numbing failure the mainstream media is to blame.

May those imbeciles never again become so infatuated with any pol.

My goodness, I imagine they must have laughed at those who loved Huey Long yet they’ve left those people behind in the dust.

I mean, they thought the joke cover of 16 magazine (or whatever it was and whoever did it) which offered a free wall poster of O and quoted him volunteering “I Sing in the Shower” was real.

THEY ARE PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS AND THEY THOUGHT IT WAS REAL!!!

As the folks over at Ace of Spades say: Obama is a stuttering cluster f*** of a miserable failure.

Which he is.

Yet, we are still stuck with him.

The greatest fear of Banksters and Politiclowns is that the sheeple will one day decide they aren’t going to adhere to all the laws passed by the elite.

The big mistake for these so called legislators, media cheerleaders, assorted political hacks, governor, and feral cops: If you hunt WE, the people, to seize and confiscate our property, wrongfully imprison or murder us, then the time will begin for the victims to hunt you down and terminate you with extreme prejudice. Sane people should NOT want to go down this road.

The question becomes whether the political class wants to provoke a civil war? Civil wars are NOT civil and they assume a life of their own. They CANNOT be managed nor can they be contained. The end result is never certain, but the Rule of Law will be the first KIA in this fight.
