Three Cuban men attempted to windsurf to Florida on Tuesday, crossing the shark-infested and notoriously turbulent Florida Straits to escape communist rule. Henry Vergara Negrin was the only member of a group leaving Jibacoa (near Havana) to arrive in Florida. Negrin is also the first documented windsurfer to safely reach Florida soil in 20 years.
He arrived at the luxurious Reach Resort in Key West 9.5 hours later, after traveling almost 97 miles, and was immediately aided by hotel staff. He was briefly hospitalized, and will be allowed to stay in the United States because of a provision in the Cuban Adjustment Act.
With Negrin at the start of his journey were an Amando (aged 28) and Dwarta (23). Negrin lost sight of his companions four hours into the journey. Dwarta was found disoriented and drifting on February 20, and the US Coast Guard was still searching for the third man as of last night.
The provision in the Cuban Adjustment Act that will allow Negrin to stay stipulates that those intercepted at sea will be returned to their home or another country.
What a story. Prayers for those lost at sea.
I wish there was a picture of the sailboard.
You know it was a cobbled together home made contraption.
Maybe they used the hood of a 57 Chevy?
Looks like Dwarta survived. He gets to try it again once we send him back.
Apparently they actually DO have sailboards in Cuba but they are in bad shape.

Wow, that’s one tough dude to pull that off. Props to him and prayers for his friends who didn’t make it.
Apparently others have done this, but none made the entire trip on the sailboard.
They were rescued at sea.

I had heard that if a Cuban actually makes it onto US soil he gets to stay, but if intercepted while still in the water he goes back. Guess that rule is still in effect ( except for Elian Gonzales).
Amen to what you said.
we were invaded by Cuba and 0bama’s navy didn’t know?
guess they were too busy playing hide the submarine these days.
welcome to the PC fleet
Hey I don’t get it!?! Why o why would any one want to risk their lives just to get to this bigoted, capitalistic country? We are SOOOO bad, we disapprove of our president just cuz he is black, don’t ya know!(obvious sarcasm alert)
By the by, we just returned from a Disney cruise in the Caribbean, our ship rescued 6 Cubans who were traveling in what looked like a large Styrofoam boat. They all got sent back.

Most cruise ships are not on American registry—think Liberia instead. So, this would likely not have counted as American soil.
