The NFL could be set for a radical rule change.
The new penalty, which will be automatic 15-yards if a player uses the N-word, is set to be introduced during the leagues owners meetings in March, according to a CBS Sports report.
John Wooten, who heads up the Fritz Pollard Alliance which pays attention to diversity in the NFL, says he expects the NFLs competition committee to suggest creating a rule penalizing players who use the N-word.
The rule would also include the potential for players to get ejected from the game, if they use the word a second time.
Wooten, who was at the NFL Combine on Friday, said he wants to completely erase the word from being used in the NFL.
"I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do, he said. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."
The NFL has yet to comment on Wootens idea, but he remains extremely hopeful the rule will be passed because there is too much disrespect in the game.
I can hardly wait till the NFL seeks parity on the field by penalizing BULLYING on the field as well as in the locker room.
A forfeit.
Only the N word? Coon, jig, Spade are ok? How about Spick, Gook? Honkey, Cracker?
Lets not forget geek, or knave, or the dreaded gunky? Imagine the Super Bowl being decided because a referee heard someone mispronounce a cornerback named Miggers? Will the injured player be allowed some me time to recover his wounded psyche? And will the teams now be required to hire sideline counselors to help the aggrieved player through this turbulent experience?
I know some of you out there think this is P,C. insanity...and it is. But do we really want another tragic scene of a 65; 320 lb. offensive lineman breaking down in tears because someone yelled YO MAMA! at him?
Please Mr. Goodell, do it for the children...I mean, the players.
Junior Barnes!!!!
That would be a niggardly move to try to reduce free speech for players by the NFL.
Could spook many athletes into wanting to play Incognito.
“That would be a niggardly move to try to reduce free speech for players by the NFL.”
Exactly.
While obviously not free speech in the constitutional sense, this new rule will deny the same free speech and right to use that word, that almost every other person in the country has in their workplace.
Oh dear God! There’s another old fart out there ancient enough to remember those great comedy albums! Bill Cosby didn’t need profanity to be a great stand-up...
Not if it only applies to white or non-black players. They’re trying to say that it would apply as a racial hatred thing, so that they can wriggle out of having it apply to a black player saying it against another black player.
I would hope that it would be enforced by white fans through boycott, etc. But I wouldn’t bet money on that.
They left themselves wide open for this mess decades ago.
That’s true, but app 20 years ago a man was still hounded from his job for saying it, even though he said it in context.
Exactly. That’s the way it has always worked, why would this be any different? The one instance of a knockout “game” player who has been prosecuted for a hate crime, has been the one known instance of it being a white “player”, even though every other instance has been black perps on white or non-black victims. Not one of them has been prosecuted for a hate crime, even when they used racial slurs for all the world to hear. I personally don’t believe that there should even be a “hate crime”. I believe that the crime speaks for itself, if a thing is a crime.
(Don’t know if someone else touched on this but)
If I was an American Indian playing for the Washington, D.C. NFL franchise, and a ‘brother’ on the other team called me a Redskin...would the other team be penalized 15 Yds, or would it be just a description of my team???
Enquiring minds want to know.
Nothing better for these people to do ? Keep making up crazy things and act like they’re important. So they can say they are important. How about whoever came up with this go get a real job. Do something productive.
Only blacks are using the word in the nfl. The league is garbage now. Its become a left wing tool.
In other words, it's all wishful thinking, a fabrication that some people are taking way to seriously.
That’s awesome, there will be a 15 yard penalty every play on both sides throughout the whole game and make it a 9 hour game.....yea. UNLEEEEESSSS the n word is only penalized for the white guys.....ahhhhhhhh ok now I get it. How you gonna keep the n’s from calling each other n’s? When I’m around n’s they call each other n’s, so how is this going to work? Why can’t the GOOD black folks of this country get the ghetto blacks to start acting like civilized Americans, PC sure isn’t going to do it and no Gubment program either. O forget it this is too confusing anymore. Up is down, down is up, left is right, right is left blah blah blah.
Well we know it started long before ‘see through bags’, no purses or backpacks, NO tail gating before the Stupor Bowl.
The next obvious move is when the announcers say the teams are in the ‘Red Zone’ that because of all the Commies and Indians being offended, the announcer will either be led out of the booth in handcuffs OR they will simply go up and THROW him out of the booth in the direction of the field.
No more ‘dances’ after a tackle the tackled will have to bow to the tackler. While we get to the bowing, make the tackles and guards resemble Sumu Wrestlers so as to give the thinness challenged more eligible to get the big bucks.
If a team is thought to be praying or thanking ‘God’ they will be penalized.
In baseball, anyone who would DARE make the ‘sign of the Cross’ or ‘blow a kiss towards heaven’ would be suspended indefinitely.
