I had breakfast at Republique on La Brea Avenue on Tuesday, and here's how the tab broke down:
Cafe Americano $3.25
Quiche $5
Tax 0.77
Surcharge Healthy LA 0.25
The last item is the one creating a little controversy at the new high-end restaurant in the old Campanile space. The owners are adding a 3% fee to every bill, which they say will pay for healthcare insurance for all their employees, from hostesses and bartenders to dishwashers and potato peelers.
"This is offensive," snapped one Yelper, who called the fee "a 3% surcharge for Obamacare."
Bill Chait, one of the owners, said most customers have been fine with the charge. But I found one breakfast diner with a bit of indigestion over the fee.

This is a tax loophole. The restaurant could have easily raised the price of food. That would be taxable. The 3% Healthcare would not be. The owners were on BOR tonite.
Leaving a 15% tip to be divided among all non-salary personnel would be fine by me. The 3% needs to be coming out of the Owner/Managerial tightwads’ pockets. I refuse to be taxed even once for Obamacare, let alone for anyone else’s over and over again! Eaters of quiche, however, as they are subhuman, Ecotopian, Tree Hugging Obamanites, should pay for everyone’s healthcare.
I only want a Ham & Cheese Omlet, no side order of tax, thank you...
An easy way to get around what? Being reminded that Obamacare is raising prices? Paying those higher Obamacare-caused prices?
Maybe I didn’t make myself clear enough:
“Don’t go to places that charge for things that bambaboy is causing” Understand now?!
Here’s an article about Obamacare:
